Ummm. You do realize that the confederate also had a rogue caravan of criminals led by Quantrill called the bushwhackers? Those people were cut from the same cloth as you describe. They had to be borderline psychopaths some of the shite they did. There really were no rules of war at that time.

Yup.

And now Grant has a Presidential library in StarkVegas.

Lol. Never happened. But keep clutching those pearls about how mean the big bad north was to the poor defenseless southerners that started the war.

My god there is some insane revisionist history going on in this thread.

Sherman’s job was to break the backs of the Confederates. Don’t forget that he was IN ENEMY TERRITORY. It’s not his fault that the South seceded, you don’t want to get all your shot destroyed by an invasion army, don’t start a war and immediately get invaded

After the war was over, he donated some cannons from Fort Sumter to LSU. They are on display a short walk from Tiger Stadium. Sherman was also pivotal in helping LSU secure the Pentagon Barracks as a new home.

We want them back. We want our trees back from Auburn, too.

Seems odd for fans of the Southeastern conference to be singing the praises for Sherman, the Union and the war of northern aggression.

Normal folk in the South, for the most part, didn't own slaves.

This is true. Upwards of 95% of southerners didn’t own slaves. Because it was a rich man’s game. But let’s not pretend that many of those common folk (peasants for lack of a better term) didn’t align their personal beliefs about racial differences with the elite white plantation owners at the time. Many of the common and poor white folks held the belief that I might be poor but at least I’m not a slave. So there were a considerable amount of sympathizers to slavery. Just as in modern times, many poor and working class whites align with the religious right and tax extremists and tea party types. Maybe different circumstances between these groups, but as long as they can screw over the left they’ll do it. And the left has groups that do this also. It cuts both ways

No, about 1/3 of Southern Whites owned slaves. And many who didn't were employed by slaveowners in some way. I think in Mississippi the majority of whites owned slaves

Actually paying homage to badasses who took what they wanted in the state of Georgia:

I know lsu fans are Yankees and love Sherman more than anyone but, what he did was wrong on a moral level.

1. We aren't yankees, but that's cute as frick. The "Tigers" in LSU Tigers aren't named after a zoo pet, but rather a fierce group of Confederate soldiers in the Civil War that fought in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, but I digress......

2. That's not wrong on a moral level. That is how you fight a nasty war when the object is to destroy the enemy, the will of the enemy to fight, and achieve total victory.

3. Curtis Lemay would put Sherman to shame on the levels of destruction he inflicted, but again: That.Is.How.You.Fight.A.War.

Yeah that's always puzzled me, why did UGA adopt the song Sherman's army probably marched to as their fight song? ?

Especially considering that Sherman was LSU's first Superintendent
