They seem to have a great fan base and SEC-similar culture. What led to the current mediocrity?

Not sure what happened other than they have hired bum coaches.
However, VT about to hire Shane Beamer or Mike Vick to restore the feeling.

Beamer hung on too long
They probably should have promoted Bud Foster to be the head coach but instead went with Justin Fuente who did ok with Beamer's recruits but things quickly went downhill when he had to bring in his own players.

They haven’t been able to keep up with NIL and they lost the legendary frank beamer. I kinda miss that program

They’re an awful football program. Outside of frank beamer era always have been.

Virginia Tech is definitely the poor Texas A&M of the ACC.
