Did Lane freak out and overpay for guys in the portal? Makes no sense that the roster has that many holes for what they paid. Isn't it conceivable that Lane overpaid for:
Leavitt
Dottery
Harper
Seaton
and others?

PU was worth it.
Watkins was worth it.

But how else do you explain the roster amount and the results on the field?

A fan can't explain that because a fan has no say so on who gets paid what amount of money. But i doubt you would ask this question if LSU had beaten ole piss.

Out of 45 players from the portal I’m sure some are misses. I would guess the plan is not to need 45 players from the portal every year

Yes. But everyone is over-paying right now. Eventually (sooner than later actually) that will stop.

No return on investment. The only return was being able to brag to other people about your school but even that is not working for most schools. Ohio State (and to a degree, Indiana) benefit from being in shitty conferences.

Ole Miss more worried about LSU NIL than their own playoff chances this weekend

LSU was desperate at QB so they were gonna have to pay more because that's what the market dictated

None of those would be overpaid. Jayce Brown was the miss. Then paying Caden Durham to stay was overpaid and a miss due to him falling in the depth chart. There might be other misses but none of the ones you pointed out were misses.

I think you need to go look at the amount of transfers Lane had at Ole Miss every year.

25 - 30 transfers
24 - 27 transfers
23 - 23 transfers
22 - 20 transfers

He did more and more transfers as the years went on not less.

I don't have a dog in this hunt one way or the other, however, my guess is this....

Given the quickness and timing of the firing of Kelly and hiring of Kiffin, I would guess Kiffin, his staff, and big cigar guys agreed at the time that it was paramount that Kiffin get some players on the roster regardless of cost. I believe there was a exodus of players when Kelly was whacked. LSU, Kiffin, and staff did what they had to do under duress. After this season I'm sure Kiffin and staff reasses their roster and direction with less constraints than they had initially coming into their first season.

It's likely... but spending $6M for a 6th yr guy was the right move.

this is the question. Was Leavitt worth 6 million or was not having Leavitt and playing Clark not feasible so they had to overpay to get someone who is "competent".

No
We have unlimited amounts of cash to spend on anything we want. We quite literally have burn bins for wrinkled $100 bills.

They are never not burning.

That’s still 15-20 less transfers than he needed on this roster. That should open up a good bit of money.

None of our big names have been misses. I guess you could argue leavitt, but we had to overpay for a QB, we had nobody.

LSU lost three starters . makes a difference. all of the media is talking about Miss. States QB and RB might not play but they fail to mention anything about the three LSU starters that are out.

It went over your head, but LSU isn't the one that paid $6M this year for a QB.

Very fair analysis. And I agree the expectation is this next offseason will be different at least with regards to the coaching staff’s understanding and evaluation of the current roster and needs.

Having said that, what really would anyone do differently? Signed the number 1 QB, QB protector and QB rusher in the portal. Starting RB looks good at a minimum. Signed multiple lineman and the entire WR room. Another starting DE and LB plus a stud safety.

I’ll give the defense another week before I get worried. They’ve been mostly good so we’ll see if last week was the exception or the norm. I think QB1 has been disappointing to start but has played better each week. He could continue to progress and make huge strides or turn out to be a player that makes great plays and dumb plays. Time will tell. WR could use a stud and losing Treydez hurts, but some have stepped up a bit as QB gets comfortable.

The real concern is the offensive line. It was real bad last year and doesn’t look good this year. I’m asking this because I really don’t know…who else should we have gotten? It seems like getting top quality linemen in the portal is hard because there aren’t many available. Which doesn’t bode well for next year unless money brings more of them in. Am I wrong or misreading that? If so then high school is the best avenue and that generally comes with a waiting period for them to be ready to play.
