ABC Trifecta

11:00 AM - Tennessee vs South Carolina
winner advances

3:00 PM - Alabama vs Ole Miss
winner advances

7:00 PM - Texas vs Georgia
both advance - winner SEC #1, loser SEC #2

but this would only work if we got 4 spots guaranteed..
would be an amazing day of SEC football though

Not really. The winner has to play 1 less game and gets a ton of rest time

They don't though, at least not 1 less game. The loser has to play one more game, the winner will have played the same number as everyone else if they win the natty. The winner doesn't get any more time off, they are prepping this week while everyone else other than the loser is sitting back getting healthy.

How about Texas gets the bye this year because they have the best record in the conference?

This is the way it used to work before there was a gazillion $ at stake. Flipping a coin between teams with identical conference records without a head to head advantage is far better than playing an extra game for the winner and 2 extra games for the loser should they go on to win a natty...

Winner plays 16 games if they win it all

Loser plays 17 games if they win it all

eta: I guess that is what you said.. but they are playing for 1 less game to win the NC.. as well as the SEC Title

Both Texas and Georgia have to win 4 games to win the NC.

You get a 2nd chance if you lose this weekend.
You only have to win 3 if you win this weekend.

They should just do away with conference championship games. They’re pointless now.

Not so fast my friend.

The national playoff gets more gay and meaningless every year. Let's ride this out and see how we feel about whoever wins the natty.

SEC Champ sounds damn good in the meantime.

This will happen at some point. The conferences have post-season tournaments in every other sport (or nearly). Football will follow.

They need to just go back to standings and tiebreakers declaring the champ.

Especially if the playoff moves to 16 teams

winner gets 24 days off with the 1st round bye (and claims an SEC Championship lol), loser plays in 2 weeks in the 1st round. don't really see how that's a waste of time

Winner is prepping as we speak. Those teams in the playoff but not in a conference title game have a bye week this week.

Bowl games have ALWAYS been notorious for teams being rusty from so much time off....conference title winners are going to face that dilemma as well. One week off is known to help heal, 3-4 weeks off have always resulted in lots of penalties, mistakes, its almost like starting the season over again. There is no real advantage to the winner and the loser is fricked seven ways from Sunday compared to where most of them are currently...some of the shitty conferences might see a team get in that wouldn't otherwise but those teams already have a built in advantage in playing shitty teams week in and week out.

So you play an extra game to not have to play an extra game? Makes sense
Having a n extra week to rest and prepare for a round 2 game is a decent advantage. That's about it, though. Hopefully the playoff committee won't set these two teams up for a another rematch early in the bracket. No one wants to see that

Georgia and Texas are playing one of the toughest opponents in CFB this season on Saturday. They are prepping now. 7-8 teams they will face in the playoff are off getting healthy now. The winner will have a pile of time off which has proven problematic in the past - bowl games have always been notoriously sloppy. The winner gets a while off but time off during the season beyond a week or so is a good time for players to get in trouble, to get fat and to get lazy. It happens during regular bowl season, and it happens in playoff games.

It's only meaningless to the teams sitting at home watching

No one cares about the SECCG unless an important player gets injured in a meaningless game. Then I hope that player or school sues the SEC for forcing the game to be played. And in following years players opt out due to possible injury so they cancel it.

Far more likely is a fricking targeting foul in the second half (I am talking to you Dan Jackson....keep your head up dammit) and missing the first half of the next game. Winning a conference title is fantastic but the risk is not worth the reward as its currently set up.

Yup... winning/being undisputed 2024 SEC Champion is a close 2nd to being the CFPNC...

The funny thing about this statement is imagine how upset everybody would be if Texas was just declared the champion because they have a one game lead on the rest of the conference. Everybody, maybe even including Texas fans (I would feel weird about it), would feel strangely about that given their schedule and that they lost to the only very good team they played in conference. I know we are a great team, however beating Georgia in a title game will go a long way in legitimizing an SEC title.
Everybody would want to throw an asterisk on a Texas title if the league finished the way it is now without that game.

Like all conferences in the old days the SEC has had many multiple champions over the years in the same season. Schedules have never been "fair". I like the championship game BUT it is too much risk for far too little reward in the current system. Again, UGA and Texas are prepping for what is most likely a fricking physical battle that is not often seen during the regular season...all for a trophy and one team getting a week off down the road while working this week. Its not worth it.

Its akin to working OT during the week at time and a half to avoid working OT on Sunday at double time....the same amount of work, way less money.

Winner does get a bye so it means something.

The winner is working this week to take off a week at the end of the month. Its still the same number of weeks worked. A bye is merely a week where you do not play a game, it is not one less game you play....the loser will play an extra game if they win the natty. 17 compared to 16 for anyone who did not lose their conference championship game.

People seriously overvalue 24 days off. Yes I think most, if not all, coaches would choose it over an extra 1st round game but there’s also an aspect of staying hot and playing well, avoiding the rust of all that time off.

Bowl games in the past have been notorious for both teams being rusty after a month off. Players also go home during that month and get into all sorts of trouble where going home for a week for Christmas is less likely to find them getting in trouble...time and exposure works that way. I would bet most coaches would prefer this week off and a game in 2 weeks against some patsy like Indiana or Arizona State than facing a physical team that is good enough to make the conference title game with the chance of having 3 weeks in a row off...

Conference Championship games seem very necessary to me, a 12 team playoff seems redundant.

Targeting is a great point. I wonder if they tell the refs "No Targeting fouls" in this game? If the SEC didn't do this, it would only compound reasons to cancel the game because it does more harm to the teams and only serve to be a cash-cow for the SEC.
