I would argue 2012 SEC championship game for UGA. Had they won, they would have coasted to the title

I love to mock UGA, but that wasn't a bed shitting. It was a great game decided on the last couple of drives.

How many teams have been shutout in the BCS/CFP championship game? I can only think of one.

Florida State's only score in the 2001 Orange Bowl was with 55 seconds left when the Oklahoma long snapper snapped it over the head of their punter into the endzone for a safety

It didn't matter. The Bowl Alliance, which put on the 1998 Orange Bowl as the national championship game, had the same rule that the BCS had. Specifically, the Coaches' Poll was contractually obligated to award the winner of the game the Coaches' Poll national championship trophy.

Am I wrong? Tennessee would have back-doored into a championship that season, but it would still have been a championship.

From Wikipedia:

quote:

The Alliance bowls were held on three successive days in each of the three years of the Alliance's existence with one game played on New Year's Eve, one on New Year's Day, and one on January 2. A Bowl Alliance Poll was formed by adding together the point totals from AP Poll and Coaches' Poll. The top two ranked teams from the Alliance conferences met in the Bowl Alliance national championship game, which rotated between the three Alliance bowls and was always held on January 2. Whoever won that game was guaranteed to be declared national champion at least in the Coaches' Poll, as they were locked into naming whoever won as their national champion. The AP Poll retained its autonomy.

Can we get a ruling from on this?

Wiki? Yikes.

"Entering the bowl season, the Volunteers had a shot at the national title, but Michigan’s 21-16 victory over No. 7 Washington State eliminated the third-ranked Vols from title contention ,leaving just Nebraska and Michigan, the only undefeated teams in the nation, vying for a national title."

2020 LSU, the year after a national title, fell further and harder the next year than any team in my lifetime

Florida - 1995 - Nebraska - Lost 24-62

There's sucking and just getting your arse kicked. Florida didn't suck during that game, we just got our asses kicked straight up. I'm not even mad about it honestly. Nobody was going to beat that Nebraska team.

Well, eight coaches split their #1 votes after the season and the others voted 32 for Nebraska and 30 for Michigan, so if there was a contract requiring coaches to vote a certain way, they didn't adhere to it. There were inherent problems if such a contract existed. It basically would have meant that no Pac 10 or Big 10 team could win the coaches title, as they were contracturally obligated at the time to play in the Rose Bowl. Those two conferences weren't a part of the Bowl Alliance.

I'm thinking about changing 1995 Florida to 1984 Florida and getting banned from the bowl game and having the conference title revoked. That 84 team was the real 1984 national champion, but all of those sanctions ruined it for them.

It’s the Nebraska beat down of Florida without any doubt. Florida was a good team, Nebraska was just unstoppable. Nebraska was just running over that defense as if they were little boys.

Better to get blown out than lose in heartbreaking fashion. Plus it made Spurrier hire Bob Stoops as DC.

We didn't really crap the bed so much as our daddy woke us up and took us behind the woodshed and proceeded to beat the living shite out of us.

Mama had to tell us what we did wrong later.

It was the defensive coordinator.
So we hired Bob Stoops in the offseason and proceeded to take FSU behind the woodshed the very next year for our first natty.

This is why it is good to spank your children because they do learn from it.

Once Michigan won their bowl game Tennessee didn't have a shot at the national title. I'm absolutely positive. I was at the game.

If that's the case, then that's the case. I'm just pretty sure it would have meant a major contractual clusterfick between the Bowl Alliance and Coaches' Poll based on their agreement that the national championship game (the 1998 Orange Bowl) would settle who was national champion rather than the voters themselves. Perhaps the Coaches' Poll was ready to make a vote of conscience and select Michigan despite the trouble it would have caused.

Or perhaps you're wrong? You seem to be under the impression that the Alliance was exactly the same as the BCS just without B10 and P10 participation.

2013 came down to the wire. They actually almost pulled the upset in that game.

They actually took the lead with under a minute left in the game and proceeded to shite the bed.
