Alabama - 2018 - Clemson - Lost 16-44
Arkansas - 1965* - LSU - Lost 7-14
Auburn - 1983 - Michigan - Won* 9-7
Florida - 1995 - Nebraska - Lost 24-62
Georgia - 2017 - Alabama - Lost 23-26
LSU - 2011 - Alabama - Lost 0-21
Oklahoma - 2004 - USC - Lost 19-55
Tennesssee - 1997* - Nebraska - Lost 17-42
Texas - 2009 - Alabama - Lost 21 - 37

*Some will argue technicalities on these. In 1965, if Arkansas had won the Cotton Bowl, they would have won the AP Trophy. In 1997, Tennessee would have been entitled to the Coaches' Trophy as per Bowl Alliance agreement, if they had won the Orange Bowl.

Auburn doesn't appear in national championship games often, so the underwhelming performance in the 1984 Sugar Bowl is the best I could come up with.

I would argue 2012 SEC championship game for UGA. Had they won, they would have coasted to the title

2013 came down to the wire. They actually almost pulled the upset in that game.

Has to be Florida in '95 (a very good Florida team) or Oklahoma in '04. Both games weren't just loses they were a trip to the woodshed.

I think LSU gets a pass for 2011 because it was just freakishly out of character for them. I wonder if Miles ate some bad grass and was poisoned?

Georgia invents new ways to crap the bed when they are on the brink of winning the championship.

I've always felt that Auburn got a raw deal that season.

Hard to say they crapped the bed, though. That was a hard fought game, and Alabama was a 7 point favorite. They did lost the 1982 Sugar Bowl when they were undefeated and ranked #1 to lose the national title to Penn State. They also got ax-murdered by Pitt in the 1976 Sugar Bowl. They may have won a share of the national title with USC had they won that game as Pitt entered that game undefeated and #1, while UGA was 10-1 and #5.

Barely crossed the 50 - and still kept it closer than A1abana did vs an 18 year old surfer chick

Arguably, they should have won the NC based on their record alone.

But when it's NYD and you're on a national televised bowl game with a chance to win the national championship, you've got to put on a show for the voters. The Sugar Bowl was a snooze compared to the Nebraska-Miami Orange Bowl.

How many teams have been shutout in the BCS/CFP championship game? I can only think of one. IIRC they didn't cross the 50 yard line until the 4th quarter, then only for a play or two. Talk about a beat down.

1972 Orange Bowl
Nebraska waxed our arse like Sundance.
I’m convinced Johnny Rogers was fed gunpowder pre game.

I'd say them taking the lead in the 2013 BCS Title game against FSU with barely a minute left and still finding a way to lose was crapping the bed pretty badly

You're wrong about the Vols. Michigan was #1 in both polls.
And Bama's would be the 71 Orange for the AP title. Lost 38-6 to Nebraska.

Have to be that Nebraska / Florida game. That beat down was epic.

The one that was so bad that CFB had to change its postseason format

It didn't matter. The Bowl Alliance, which put on the 1998 Orange Bowl as the national championship game, had the same rule that the BCS had. Specifically, the Coaches' Poll was contractually obligated to award the winner of the game the Coaches' Poll national championship trophy, regardless of how the voters actually felt about Tennessee being the national champion.

This was in the era when the Big Ten/Pac-10 wouldn't participate in the #1 vs #2 bowl match-ups that the Bowl Coalition/Alliance put on in the 1992-1997 seasons.
