Or perhaps you're wrong? You seem to be under the impression that the Alliance was exactly the same as the BCS just without B10 and P10 participation.

Well, it's hard to find a primary source that verifies this arrangement as the Bowl Alliance (1995-1997) pre-dates at lot of online newspapers, so the records are not available on Google.

But a search of Google from a number of secondary sources on college football websites seems to indicate a lot of people who are under the impression that the Bowl Alliance followed the same agreement as the BCS, specifically that the Coaches' Poll was contractually obligated to award the trophy to the winner of the designated game regardless of voters' actual preferences.

Edit: On top of that, I find it hard to believe that a post-season bowl arrangement for declaring the national champion wouldn't have brought aboard one of the major polls as a partner in the arrangement. The whole purpose was to settle the national champion question on the field, and matching #1 vs #2 is only half of the equation. You need to have at least one major poll partner up and agree to recognize the winner of the game.

I would have to say 2011s LSUs performance. Six weeks to prep for a team you beat at their home in November and you can not make past midfield. A game that was played in your home state. There isn't a close second.

Auburn could've won the Sugar Bowl 100-0 and they still probably would've been left out. The Orange Bowl hype was through the roof and already pushed as a "national title" game by NBC. 83 Nebraska had been labeled the GOAT up until that game. I bet a lot of voters just cut the TV off when it ended instead of switching over to the end of the Sugar Bowl.

Losing by 3 in overtime isn't "crapping the bed".

After being up by 14 points at the start of the second half, and sacking the Bama QB for an 18 yard loss on the play right before the game winnning TD?

In modern football, a 14 point lead with a half to go is nothing.

The 01 SEC title game cost UT a chance at Miami for the BCS title. This loss hurt way more the mauling Nebraska laid on us in '97...this and the Titans Superbowl are absolutely brutal to think back on.

LSU knocked us off our #2 spot with their backup qb, Booty. That's when the backup QB curse started and was also our last elite team (2015 was talented af but butch) The 07 team was good, not elite, but they backdoored into the SEC title game in what was a very average SEC east.

Edit: to the Florida fan, bigdgator, Ify. That's how I look back on our bowl games in Nebraska in both 1997 and 99 but esp 97. They were just dominant. I wasn't even mad...just disappointed. They were just better ngl

I think LSU gets a pass for 2011 because it was just freakishly out of character for them.

Les Miles really let us down in this game. He did nothing to prepare for the second meeting with Bama, and his coaching performance during the game was atrocious. Honestly, after this game the mad hatter was never the same. After the game, Les completely lost his mojo.

UGA had several two-score leads with a freshman QB on the other side. After going up two scores they immediately got an interception deep in Bama territory. Even a field goal would've put the game out of reach. Oh, and they gave up a touchdown on a 4th and goal to make it a tie game.

That was an epic choke by UGA. Don't downplay it.

He had LSU looking good the next year vs Bama in Baton Rouge.

Except for the last minute and a half, anyway.

Alabama was an excellent team that took advantage of UGA's mistakes. And having a rock star on the bench in Tua after UGA shut down Jalen was icing on the cake. Alabama earned that championship, fighting back, and pulling it off in the end. Great game.

Throw in #1 Georgia's upset loss to #2 Penn State, 27-23, for the 1982 national title.

I thought that was more of Penn State just playing some great defense rather than UGa spitting the bit.

I guess that's crapping the bed, but Alabama was the No. 1 team and perceived as the favorite for the entire month leading up.

Not really...Herschel Walker purposely played light and soft the entire game in order to avoid injury and, therefore, avoiding hurting his chances at being drafted a few weeks later. Fans were furious (the only time I've ever known our fans to be mad at him). But, it was forgotten.
