God damn Florida. That’s a lot of people for a state not much bigger % wise than day Louisiana, and your per capita is ridiculous too

Someone noticed

We just aren't a big population state. The places that are nice in Arkansas, in terms of climate and economy, are mountainous or in the hill country.

LA is smaller than that due to erosion of the wetlands.

A lot of coastline (and beach) = higher population

Go ahead and thank our “small government” legislature over the past 16 years and thank the combination of second term Jindal and first term aid the sloth being governors for the last 8 years.

I may be stupid but not understanding the per capita formula. Alabama has a bigger population than Louisiana with less NFL players yet they are ranked higher per capita?

The per capita numbers don't come from the population numbers posted in the OP, which does make it a little confusing. The per capita numbers come from this calculation which seems a little funky:

quote:

To determine the top football baby factories, cleveland.com tabulated state totals for where NFL players were born and then calculated a ranking -- based on a ratio of current players from each state to births in the early 1990s when a big share of today's players were born. The top five states are all from the Southeast.

The data points are from September 2017
LINK

These numbers are from the end of last season.
LINK

College Station sits in the middle of the Texas Triangle which is a 60,000 square mile area with a population of 17,745,584 people. 181 players in the NFL at the end of last year were born in this area. I'm not going to look up 90's birthrates, but you will find that the Texas Triangle produces players per capita that are more in line with your Southeast States.

Also, a shout out to Mississippi. They have 9 hall of fame players with a current population of 2,986,000. No one else is even close.

Per capita means doesn't mean much.Per participant is much more accurate.

It just keeps getting worse. MF'ers need to stop moving here.

Here's a great example, Champions Gate, Florida. It didn't exist a little more than a decade ago.

Now, Champions Gate is an area in Kissimmee,Osceola County,East Central Florida,Florida with a population of almost 20,000.

We have four major cities which leads to a lot of the population. Orlando, Miami, Tampa/St.Pete area, and Jacksonville. Lot of people in each to pad the numbers.

They are taking in from the early 90's and only including births from the early 90's. In the early 90's Louisiana had a higher population than Alabama.

ETA: OP made it confusing by posting current population.
