see that I'm on board with, that makes sense.
but it has been repeated ad nauseum for years that it in The South, it goes beyond that. Like in the restaurant ordering situation. That I find stupid.

No the frick we don't. You order a coke if you want a coca cola classic in the red can. Anything else, you specify what you want you tards.
So, honest question, what do you call it in general? You're not always going to know specifically what kind they have. Say you're at a restaurant or someone's house or something and you ask what kind of ______ they have.
Pop?
Soda?
Coke?

If I had something in mind that I wanted at someone's house, I'd say "do you have any [insert drink name]", or if at a restaurant "do you serve coke or pepsi"

I enjoy referring to beers as pop. As in, "I had a coupla pops at the ball park last night"

Tennessee should be Sundrop or Mountain Dew IMO.

I think there is a nuance that's not well understood when people say they use the term "coke" for all soft drinks etc. I use the term in that way, but if a waitress asked me what I wanted to drink I would never say "coke" unless I wanted a coca cola. I would say the exact kind of "coke" I wanted if someone asked me what I wanted to drink. On the other hand, if my wife asked me what we should serve to drink at a party, I might respond with "how about just beer, wine, cokes and bottled water." She would then probably buy Dr. Pepper, Sprite, Coca Cola and Root Beer to fulfill the cokes suggestion. Where you might use the term "soft drink" or "soda"....we would use the term "coke." Just as you would never answer "soft drink" when a waitress asked you what you desire to drink...we would never answer "coke" unless we wanted a coca cola.
This.

If I'm at a restaurant I order the exact type of drink I want. If I'm walking out the house and my girlfriend yells "get some cokes!," I'd have to ask what kind. She'd then probably say "Coke and Mountain Dew...duh!"
If I'm at an event and my dad asked me what they have to drink I'd reply "beer over there, and different kinds of cokes over there."

It's been a soda water to my family for as long as I've been alive

"Can I have a Coke?"
"Hey you got any cokes?"
I'm pretty sure my friends would know the difference in those two questions if I asked them.

Missouri is literally divided on everything...we can't even decide between soda/pop.

I'm from Louisiana and it is very common for people to use coke to refer to all sodas. As in "what kind of coke should I get for the party? Dr. Pepper, sprite, coke." Or "you want a coke? Yea what kind do you have? I have sprite and pepsi."
Maybe in a Louisiana, but not in Nola. People ask for a cold drink. First time I heard it, I offered water, beer, juice, etc. They were like "Nah, you know, coke or something"
So soda is called a cold drink (drank) in Nola.

So is Kentucky. West, it's coke. East wants pop.

My whole nola family would whip your Bama arse if you offered them a coke after asking for a cold drink. That means beer or high ball
That's what I offered them, was a cold beer. But they wanted soda. So I have them warm ginger ales, and they were happy. Maybe it's a hood thing. But it definitely surprised me when furniture delivery guys didn't want a cold beer.
