SEC Referees and Offensive Holding

Has it become clear to most people that SEC referees have made an obvious shift to only calling offensive holding out in the open field?
I've watched a lot of SEC football games this year and it feels like holding calls on drop back passes or run plays inside the guards are almost NEVER called anymore. I'd love to see stats on the # of holding calls per game, because it feels like it has dropped DRASTICALLY in the last 3-4 years.
Kind of like with baseball - I guess I'm ok with it as long as it is consistent, but it definitely feels like a shift.

Much preferred to the alternative.

It is if we prefer offense over defense. That is a shift that is drastically in favor of offense.

I think so - because the old "you could call it every play" rule really means you are just randomly calling it, and that isn't really fair. So it's better to just call the egregious ones that spring runs than call the random one you see every 6 plays.
It does favor offense a lot though, especially in the passing game.

I almost feel bad for defenses, so many things go in favor of the offense now if they have cut down holding calls a lot it's just 1 more thing to quell defensive play.
1 thing Pollack talked about pre-game was the RPO being unfair and he even used the word "cheating" because of having to respect both the run and pass on same play to the point linemen could block downfield some and still get away with throwing it and no flag. Similar to play action yes, but in the RPO you can actually give the ball off, a play action is always a pass. Hardly ever are you blocking way downfield on a play action either.

Wonder what the theme of this thread will be outside of the actual question being asked

I agree exept on one point -they don't even call them on egregious holds in plain sight but 20 % of the time.
I don't like ticky-tac calls, but when it's serious and in plain sight you've got to call it.

Yea - almost didn't post it solely for that reason, but figured maybe we'd get a sprinkle of decent conversation in before it devolved.

Holding is only a problem when it's the other team doing it.

Yea - between having 8 inches of a QB to hit, having to always consider how you tackle a guy as you are being blocked, basically having no way to play 1-on-1 pass defense down the field and having no ability to shed blockers, RPOs and everything out in space..........sheesh, that's a helluva job to ask.

Derrick Brown gets held every snap almost. Next Auburn game you happen to watch, watch when #5 blows through the C/G gap. The OL arm is outstretched holding on for dear life.
This happens at least 4 or 5 times a game and has been called MAYBE twice all year. I clearly remember only one so I'm gonna give the benefit of doubt and say they've called at least one other time.
I'm gonna be labeled a homer but I e seen the exact same thing with other teams around the league including the Auburn line doing the same thing described above with no flag. So I'm not being a homer, it is ridiculously bad around the league and something needs to be done about it. A hold is a hold in the trenches or in the open field. Call it.

Evidently they don't call this anymore

The same thing happened to us in 2016. I think that defensive front 7, which was one of the best and most tenacious groups I've ever seen at Alabama, had like 3 holding calls against it the entire season. That doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
It was almost like referees applied a different standard because of how good they were.

I'm telling you - if it isn't out on the edge or in the open field they just don't call it. And even that is a 50/50 proposition, especially when a QB is trying to get outside the pocket.

Defenses are totally shafted these days.

There would be so many of those clips that it’d clog the bandwidth of this site if they were posted.
But I’d agree that it has become more lenient and called less.

Yep - and it applies to everyone. I'm sure there are certain styles of offense where it helps more and obviously certain defenses where it hurts more, but it's just a general across the league change in approach.

I generally strongly prefer college rules to the NFL, but in the case of offensive linemen downfield on passing plays I think the pros have it right. I wish college would adopt that rule. College football is starting to look like watching someone play the old NCAA football games running what we would call the “money play offense” and only calling plays they knew the AI did not know how to cover. Back in the day that was grounds for an arse whoopin’ if you did it to the wrong person.

Millennials don’t have the attention span to watch a defensive chess match. So, almost all the tweaks over the past decade have been in favor of offense.
PS. In before They only allow Bama to hold. Damn SEC offices and REC conspiracy.
