The play definitely cost us the game. Because even if you take out the play being called dead, there was a penalty with two players having the same number. That turns it into a 4th and 1 in Memphis territory for State. Just an overall cluster frick of an officiating job that the SEC won’t do shite about.

How much crying are we going to get from state fans? Two players with the same jersey number? That’s really what you are hanging this loss on?
Let’s not forget that Memphis was already leading when that punt return happened and had all the momentum going their way. Acting like you can just eliminate the punt return and the rest of the game plays out the same exact way is crazy. Memphis won, get over it

No, we’re also hanging it on the ref that signaled it dead. But it’s rich seeing an LSU fan talk about fans complaining about refs.

The entire game turned on a stupid decision by Leach. He went for it on 4th and goal instead of taking the easy FG and extending the lead. YOU ALWAYS TAKE THE POINTS ON THE ROAD. He didn’t, the 4th down play was unsuccessful, and then Memphis drove 98 yards and took the lead. That was the momentum swing and State never got it back.
Freeze did the exact same thing in the Liberty Bowl several years ago for Ole Miss. They were up 10-0 and he got cute in the red zone on 4th down instead of kicking the FG. Memphis grabbed the momentum and ended up winning that one going away.
If Leach kicks that FG, none of the rest happens. No 98 yard drive. Even if Memphis scores it’s a tie game, not a lead. The punt return almost certainly doesn’t happen, at least not the same way. Make the right call there and State likely wins by at least a score and never really gives up the momentum. All it takes is one stupid decision to open the door in a road game.

Why let Memphis State College hang around to the point of losing on one bad call. That is what we learned years ago. It’ll be ok. Live and learn. State got beat by an inferior team.

Yeah that was a momentously bad call. Why Leach didn't got into a full blown melt down over it is beyond me. At the very least demand a review or something.
