This is just a placeholder until they can get a bigger contract out of ESPN.
That's what they keep hinting at, but ESPN isn't going to pay up. They have us locked in for a decade in cheap 2020 money (when the contract was signed). Why would they buy 8 extra games for very expensive 2025 money when they already have plenty of good inventory to fill all their timeslots? Plus, ESPN has all the leverage. They know the SEC doesn't want to lose rivalry games like Bama/Tenn, AU/GA, and Texas/A&M, so the pressure will be on the conference to expand to 9 whether ESPN volunteers more money or not.

UTa will be an easy win for several years. Maybe forever. They’ve been down for almost 20 years. OU has sucked for awhile as well.

8 extra SEC games per year is worth millions. Multiply that over a decade, say, and that’s EIGHTY extra SEC games. Yes, ESPN will come to the table with more cash and the SEC is wise to force their hand here. In the meantime the SEC could easily go to 2-6 format to secure more of the traditional rivalries. SEC has the leverage here without question.

A 9 game SEC schedule doesn't mean you can't play one "big" OOC game every season. That still leaves 2 crap opponents that no one wants to see. If divisions are gone, the SECCG should be ended. No way the participants aren't at a disadvantage in the 12 team playoff era.

That makes no sense.
If we are looking to scrap the SECCG, why don't we just make it a 13 game season?
Why not play football and make money while other conferences are playing their conference championship game?

The division format didn’t always pick the best 2 teams. The east was down for several years after UF’s Urban Meyer years

Totally agree if we could bid those extra games out on the open market. But our dumbasses waited until right after ESPN inked the new deal to add 2 huge programs and consider switching to 9 games. ESPN knows we are in a scheduling bind and doesn’t owe us a cent extra if we want to preserve our rivalries. They wont pay anything close to fair market value.

So what are the tie-breaker criteria with no divisions? That's the big issue we need to be talking about. That shite needs to be debated and etched in stone to keep the SEC/ESPN finger off the scale.

Welcome to the SEC, seeing as you're about to be "rivals" of half the teams here

God, yes. Administrators always have to overthink things. It’s like, “Let’s throw a slant route at the one yard line in the Super Bowl because the best power back in football just gained four yards and, well, we just really need to do something different.”
That’s about how administrators think.

No divisions will have more impact on the SEC than 8 or 9 games. The playoff is going to 12 teams and having a true SECCG that actually guarantees the 2 best teams each year will be much more entertaining.

I want some delicious and spicy tiebreakers for the SECCG spots. some weird parity wheel/head to head bullshite, points differential, best coach sideline freakout, hottest coeds, etc.

I'm not sure how I feel.
I am glad that my two teams (likely) won't face each other every year.
