(a) - Why does Georgia name their band after the opponent of the American revolution and (b) have a fight song that was stolen from the Union army of the Civil war?
bigDGator........(a) - "Glory, Glory" (played to the tune of the Battle Hymn), is UGA's spirit song --- NOT the fight song. UGA's fight song is, "Hail to Georgia".
In 1955, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper, the band was described as the “red-coated band” as they played in a concert with the Georgia Tech band. Hence, the name, “The Dixie Redcoat Band” was created in 1955.
In 1971, responding to calls for a more inclusive band name, the first part of the name was dropped, and the band was renamed “The Redcoat Band” by Roger Dancz, who was the band director from 1955-1991. That same year, Dancz removed the song “Dixie” from the band’s repertoire.
The band is NOT named after America's opponent in the Revolution.
(b).......As for our spirit song, "Glory, Glory" (played to the the tune of The Battle Hymn of the Republic)......It was sung at games as early as the 1890's, but arranged in its present form by Georgia's immortal musician-composer Hugh Hodgson in 1915.
Auburn University's marching band copied UGA and began playing, "Glory to ol' Auburn", in the 1950's (anything good UGA does, Auburn ALWAYS tries to copy us --- including putting hedges in their stadium during the past 40 years, whereas, UGA's had them since 1929).
Although the Georgia Redcoat Marching Band uniforms closely resemble the British King's Guards who stand outside Buckingham Palace, they still look gorgeous!!
Red & Black.....can't beat these colors!!

Toiletband of the Southwest is my preferred nomenclature; however, the UTerus' official name for your band is The University of Texas Longhorn Band, dummy.
Another swing and a home run for me.

Is “GBfTL” not the official name of our marching band?

No, it is not. It is the popular name for the band.
The official name of LSU's marching band as stated by the university is....
Lousisiana State University Tiger Marching Band, more commonly (or popularly) known as, "The Golden Band from Tigerland".

Hmmm….we should amend that immediately

I would agree with you......it's a great name for a great band!

Sorry, but this award means almost nothing. Why? Because each band can only win it once. Eventually every band will have a Sudler Trophy by process of elimination, regardless of quality.
The order in which the bands win their trophies means a little more, but in fact it doesn't mean much about the current quality of the band. It may have been great 30 years ago when it won the trophy, and suck now, or vice versa.

I will concede that the FTAB is far and away the best drill band in the country. They are phenomenal

Why does a school with a gator mascot play music from a movie about a shark?

I had never heard of this. Thanks for sharing. Nice to see The Million Dollar Band on the list. I'm surprised UT is not represented.

They are the only college to have a brass and drill corps.

This must be the low point of the year if we’re posting band competitions.
