Measuring strength against attrition is most equatable to a measure of team depth. The best variable for this would be calculating the percentage of team blue chip ratio.
You mentioned Indiana as a capable team of performing this feat and UGA/Alabama as teams incapable of doing so.

And penn st won in spite of their shite QB, and a head coach who can't win big games

I like how all the Neutered Damned folks scream and howl about deserving a spot in the CFP this year, but when they don't get it they take their ball and go home - refusing to play anyone to close out the year. Could it be that they're fearful of getting that azz whipped playing in a lesser bowl game by a lesser opponent than they think they deserve?
If they had any hair between their legs, they'd play in a lower bowl game and totally dominate their opponent to prove their point. But... no.

Yeah, obviously not having to run the gauntlet of Penn State, Purdue, UCLA and Rutgers has totally prepared Ohio State to play 4 tough games in a row
