You want to spend MORE time at altitude. The body begins to adjust (producing more red blood cells) in as little as a day or two. I used to be in the ski industry and they taught us that proper hydration minimizes the effect of altitude. We told our clients to drink water and lots of it if they were struggling with altitude.

Operating in 10-20 second bursts of activity, football is primarily anaerobic. VO2 max decreases approximately 10% for every 1000 m of altitude, starting at 1500 m, so SLC is right on the cusp of causing problems for athletes. The issue becomes the oxygen available to the muscles and how quickly they recover between plays (sets). Depending on how quickly each athlete is adapted/trained, short term hypoxia could be an issue for the UF players. That can be mitigated with supplemental O2 between plays and series.

While what you said is true, the non altitude team pays for all that in spades in the fourth quarter against a physical team like Utah. Players will have a hard time recovering between plays. OTOH hand the Florida players are going to get a charge playing in a drier and slightly cooler climate for the first quarter or two.

5,000 ft and under is basically nothing. You can acclimate in hours.

As others have said, 4300' isn't bad.

You really don't see altitude sickness until 7-8k feet.

UFs success this year lies 100% with the QB play. If Mertz plays like he did at Wisconsin they win 3 games this year

This could be a true statement. Ask Miami about playing Ty Detmer in that altitude. Plus the fact, Utah is a very good football program!

I have family in park city. The elevation aspect is overplayed, southern humidity early in the season and northern cold late in the season a far more formidable than elevation

This seems to be the opposite opinion of professional sports teams.

Then why do endurance athletes train at altitude and the US Olympic training center in Colorado Springs?

Does Denver's mile high altitude really affect the outcome of sports games?

quote:

The data from all those athletes led Millan to the conclusion that every for 1,000 feet of elevation gain, a person loses 2 percent of their ability to consume oxygen and gets exhausted 4 percent faster than they normally would.

At one mile above sea level, that’s a 10 percent drop in your body’s ability to transport oxygen and 20 percent drop in time to exhaustion.

“That could be substantial, especially when we talk about high exercise intensities,” Millan said.

quote:

Acclimating to the mile-high air takes at least nine days – an amount of time that’s not practical for professional sports teams to spend in Denver ahead of a game, Millan said.

What they should do instead is arrive as close to game time as possible. That way they avoid some of the negative effects like poor sleep and dehydration

So we're kind of both right. Spending more time at altitude will mitigate the effects, but teams don't have enough time to do that before a game. Arriving earlier will mitigate sleep and hydration issues I spoke of originally, but do nothing to combat the physical effects of performing at high elevation.

It has a big effect, especially in the 2nd half of the games. Way back in the 80’s when the NBA was worth watching, my team would lose a lot to Denver and Utah, mostly after leading in the 1st half. My guys ran out of gas.

If Mertz can at least be serviceable and the Defense shows improvement, I could see a fair improvement this year. Definitely a lot of questions for sure. Utah will be a great barometer, win or lose.

We’ve reached the “let’s just play the fricking games” stage.

This is where I'm setting my expectations. Just show me a competent defense and put a QB out there that takes care of the football. I don't expect a killer season but give me some hope that things are headed in the right direction and don't lose the recruiting class.

At 5000ft yeah. But if over 10k you'd need a week to acclimate.

Humans also don't acclimate to humidity (although some people have genetic advantages).

But at 5k feet it's just hours and you're fine.

4300 isn't that bad tbh

Honestly as someone who has lived in both

I'd rather do high level athletics in Altitude then in the humidity of Gainesville

Tom Petty and hurricanes really upset butthurt LSU fans, for some reason. Not all of them, just the butthurt ones.

Will be over 90 at kickoff.

65% humidity versus 90% humidity in Gainesville

Will feel refreshing to the Gators.
