Kelly Bryant to Transfer - Greenville News

quote:

“I feel like it's what's best for me and my future,” Bryant said in an exclusive interview with The Greenville News. “I was just going to control what I could control and try to make the most of my opportunity, but at the end of the day, I just don't feel like I’ve gotten a fair shot.

“They asked me how I felt about it,” Bryant said, recalling his meeting with Swinney. “I was like, ‘I’m not discrediting Trevor. He’s doing everything asked of him, but on my side of it, I feel like I haven't done anything to not be the starter. I've been here. I've waited my turn. I've done everything y’all have asked me to do, plus more.’

“I've never been a distraction. I've never been in trouble with anything. To me, it was kind of a slap in the face.

Newsflash, only 1 kid can play QB. The one who doesn't is going to be disappointed, even pissed, especially if the one who isn't playing has already won a lot. No amount of smiling and joking and talking about how great everything is can smooth over that concrete fact.

Talk shite about Jalen Hurts's lack of abilities, he's at least staying with the team and working with Enos to get better as a passer. He's nowhere near the talent Tua is but he has shown improvement in his drop back passing game this season.

you can look at Jalen hurts from at least 2 perspectives - he is a tool being used by saban for his needs, OR Jalen is a solid team player.

actually, could be both. saban is the master manipulator.

Jalen is the backup QB. He clearly has decided (if he stays and plays 1 more game) that he's ok with that. Implying that he is being hoodwinked at this point is basically saying he's a moron who can't see what is in front of him. And if Jalen decided to leave, that's fine too.

Dabo could have easily started Bryant this week (even for 1 series), and his eligibility would have been done. No transfer option. He did that kid a huge solid by naming Lawrence the starter and letting Bryant decide his fate.

Dudes gonna be leaving all over the place.

I'm guessing every coach in the country is having to have conversations like that after 4 games at this point. It's clearly taking a lot of guys by surprise (Auburn is a prime example).

Hurts is actually in a great position if he’s trying to prepare for the NFL.

Tell me where other than Duke he would have a better QB coach than Dan Enos?

Not to mention he is getting close to 50% of the snaps in both practice and games surrounded by NFL talent and on a national stage.

Where he goes from here who knows but it’s not a bad situation for him at all.

Going to be interesting how coaches adjust. Good for kids, getting the freedom and all that, but I'm guessing coaches are going to start having frank discussions with kids in the summer about their roles and such more often. Which maybe is for the best.

I'm guessing we see a lot more summer transfers starting next year and a lot more "play a kid" if it is down to a kid and maybe a 4th year program player who you are scared might up and leave.

I understand what your saying but that would backfire on Dabo quick. He would be dumb to do something like that so lets not give him too much credit for it.

I agree re: Enos. You can already see him looking more comfortable, confident and quick on his throws. He doesn't have that long hitch anymore.

My totally unsourced guess is he spends the rest of the year at Alabama learning from Enos, practicing his arse off, and then he transfers for his graduate school year somewhere where he thinks he can have a big year and prove he can be a NFL QB.

Just my guess.

when can coaches of other teams start talking to disgruntled players about transferring?

What are the rules regarding that?

Did they change at all?

I don't think they "officially" can until the kid officially withdraws. But, obviously there is some contact somewhere. Has to be.

Why is Hurts getting almost half the practice snaps? I don’t get it.

The Kelly Bryant situation does give Jalen something to ponder. Jalen has one more year of eligibility than Bryant as of today. But Jalen has now played in 4 games. If he plays in one more this season, he won't be able to invoke the new redshirt rule for this year and he'll be down to just one year of eligibility like Bryant.

Will Saban keep playing Hurts? Does Jalen transfer now to save those two years of eligibility and therefore make himself that much more valuable to whatever teams vie for his services? Bryant has shown that he doesn't need to wait until December when he graduates.

I honestly think Jalen is learning a ton from Enos and realizes his best path to being a NFL QB is too keep improving his technical skills under Enos this season and then go show those off somewhere in the right situation next year.

With that said, he could announce he's transferring today.
