Makes you wonder what Price would have done.

He screwed two programs at once that offseason.

It all worked for the best in the end obviously.

but then lost to LSU and Auburn so that's how we know the Tide weren't that good that year.
LSU finished 5th and Auburn finished 14th both with a 7-1 SEC record. It's not like they lost to some scrubs.

Yeah, he's not a good coach.

Then I could argue Chizik left Auburn in worse shape than Shula left Alabama if we are going final records and scores. 2006 Alabama lost to Arkansas in 2OTs, UT by 3, and their bowl game by 3.

I really don't want to know what the picture is supposed to convey. It's intriguingly disturbing.

Saban went 9-2 in his one season at Toledo and his 2 losses were by a combined 5 points.

He took Bama and LSU to a SEC championship game in his 2nd season at both.

How did he do at Michigan State and the NFL..?

Yeah, I was being facetious and repeating why I imagine many Bama fans would say about any year that ended with losses to LSU and Auburn.

My opinion is Shula left Bama in worse shape and on probation. Still better shape than many schools but not Florida. Zook left plenty of talent and no probation to deal with. Meyer credited Zook specifically from the podium when he accepted the crystal 2 years later.

To that point, let's look at Rivals recruiting rankings for that period:

2002: #15 LSU, #20 Florida, #30 Bama
2003: #1 LSU, #2 Florida, #49 Bama
2004: #2 LSU, #10 Florida, #24 Bama
2005: #15 Florida, #18 Bama
2006: #2 Florida, #11 Bama
2007: #1 Florida, #10 Bama
2008: #1 Bama, #3 Florida
2009: #1 Bama, #11 Florida

Even with Zook, Florida was still pulling in pretty decent talent. I listed LSU above only because Saban was there at the time and obviously had a huge impact on recruiting.

There will be no winner on this topic...Both are damn good coaches, who get the most out of their respective teams. Urban is the offensive guru, and Saban is the defensive guru. Both build teams to their styles, and they get the job done.

Yea, Shula recruited 7-5 type rosters at Alabama. He lost out on the best players in Alabama to Auburn/Florida/Tennessee.

2007: #1 McClain, #8 Patrick Crump, & #10 William Vlachos committed to Shula

Not exactly true considering Shula got the #1 player in state 3 out of 4 years. I do love revisionist history tho.

Here is my one issue with Saban:

He is 8-12 at Bama against teams that finished in the top 10. When the other team is good and the playing field is even, he loses more than he wins. Dude is still awesome though

How does that record compare against other coaches, especially Meyer? I'm honestly curious.

I've always maintained that Saban is not the best gameday coach. He isn't bad but he's not a premiere Xs and Os guy. His talent is recruiting, developing, and managing the program.

Meyer is 8-8. The amazing one is Peter carrol, 14-5

So Meyer is slightly better but Saban has a larger sample size. Those two probably blow away most other coaches in that regard.

Carrol's record is sick.

Except not really

If only they could test this theory out.

Like...with a game.

Where both teams played, and they had it all on the line.

And then one team would win, and it would be contemporary -- like...say...this month.

And this contemporary game would decide who was actually the better coach.

.......

.......

Oh wait.

but when you look at it closely, you'll see that Urban won his at two premier, nationally recognized CFB programs in extremely populous, talent rich states.

Saban won both of his titles at regional schools, in smaller states, with less alumni, where the built in advantages are less noticeable, or lacking all together.

bullshite! Saban's recruiting base is the entire Southeastern US. Good luck trying to build a NC at Ohio State with nothing but players from Ohio. tOSU's 3 best players this year (Barrett, Bosa and Elliott) are out of state recruits.
