SummerOfGeorge. I may be looking at different recruiting rankings than you did for your numbers.

Out of curiosity, where are the Richt recruiting rankings coming from? I'm guessing maybe just one of Rivals or ESPN?

I just used the Rivals rankings for Richt's classes, since they and Scout were the only real national services in the early 2000s. I'm not sure what the component uses for those years.

Kirby is recruiting at a completely different level than Richt did his first few years (as stated).

Yep, agree

Well that means Richt did as much with less.

OSU was garbage that year and I'd put us up against anyone the way we played from mid-November on.

Wait, the team that won the national title was garbage? I love this place.

That means he did less with sometimes less.

His 2014 team had some great talent but loss to very average UF and SC teams.

Richt took over from Jim Donnan (who went 8-4 his last two seasons) and Kirby took over from Richt (who went 10-3 and 9-3). I'm guessing Kirby stepped into a much better situation especially when you factor in that UT and UF were a mess when he got hired. Kirby has them on the cusp of a title so that is very big difference. Given Richt's inability to recharge the U and Kirby's success, UGA made the right decision.

nother part of Richt's downfall was his failure to realize that games are won and lost on the line of scrimmage.

totally agree. George Foster was the ONLY offensive lineman he ever had drafted in the first round.

He is a better recruiter for sure. But time will tell on the rest. Way to early to fairly speculate.

Technically... Isaiah Wynn went in the first round and was a Richt recruit. It's also fair to say that it would never have happened without Sam Pittman...

So the 2nd best team in the SECW not only lost by 29 pts but they also finished 3 games behind? If that doesn't tell you about unbalanced the West was I don't know what will.

It just shows you that the third best team in the SECW is every bit as good as the best team in the SECE.

What exactly are you guys doing close an obvious huge gap in the division?

Winning the Divison the year before.

Richt inherited a better roster than smart, but played a stronger east.

Honestly I don’t see much difference in being 3rd and 5th in the recruiting ratings. What, that means a one or two of your players had one more star?

Yeah, that’s not even close to being the case here.

Kirby had more 5*s in his 2018 class than Richt had in his first 3 years in Athens combined.

So how come they were shutout by Bama by 29 pts? The same Bama team that almost lost to us?

Hell, Missouri played Bama closer than every other team in West except MSU.

And that has exactly what to do with Bama steamrolling the West last year? And steamrolling them in '19 as well. Don't see anyone coming close to closing the gap.

Not to mention taht all it takes is 1 or 2 more of those 5 stars to turn a season around. Look at the 2006 class as an example. UF finished 2nd (24 commits / 3 5* / 15 4*) and UGA finished 3rd (26 commits / 2 5* / 14 4*). On paper relatively similar right? But 2 of those 5* for UF were percy harvin and tebow. Take harvin away and insert another moderate ranked 4* in his place...UF still probably has a top 4/5 class but in realitiy may not have a national title. All it takes is that 1 transcendent guy to take you to the next level.

There is a massive difference in kirby's classes and richts.
