Rex Grossman vs. Ryan Mallett

Who was the better SEC QB? And is Ryan Mallett just a product of Petrino's QB friendly system much like Rex Grossman was the beneficiary of Spurrier's "Fun 'n' Gun" offense? I always thought the two QBs had a lot in common. Awesome arm strength, great college production, questionable decision making, coached by a brilliant offensive mind whose offensive system have churned out a lot of NFL busts, etc.... Am I off base with this comparison or is it a valid one?

Mallett would beat Grosswoman in an arm wrestling competition and then throw a football threw a mountain.

You love comparisons.
Grossman's 2001 stats are very similar to Mallett's 2010 stats. Grossman should've won the Heisman that year. I'd take Grossman though.

I dunno how "QB friendly" Petrino's system is. Coach Petrino puts a lot of responsibilities in his QB's hands. They're almost expected to be OCs on the field and are expected to audible out of bad plays, etc.
Petrino's offenses have usually been tailored towards his QB's strengths. At Louisville, he had a dual threat in Stefan LeFors and a pro-style drop-back in Brian Brohm. Both were highly productive in his system.
On another note, admittedly neither Petrino nor Spurrier has produced a great NFL QB. However, I wonder if you see a similar trend among "offensive guru" coaches who call their own plays [e.g. Mike Leach, Spurrier, Petrino, etc.}

Since Petrino's offense can't work in the SEC I can draw no other conclusion than it must be all Mallett

Dang formatting.
Rex never smoked Kools but he did have a passer rating of 148 for his career.
Malet is way better though. Best there ever was or will be.

What NFL busts are we talking about? Wuerffel wasn't a high draft pick and I can't remember if Shane Matthews was drafted at all. Brohm was a second-rounder who's ridden the pine for 3 seasons so far but he may yet get a chance.
The only one I can think of who should be considered a bust would be Grossman himself.

And even he got to play significant minutes on Sunday.
