Bad:
Auburn recruited Tony White to play basketball, but ended up not having room for him. Sonny Smith called Don Devoe and UT took him. In 1987 White set the UT single game scoring record by scoring 51 points against Auburn.

Good:
Urban Meyer wouldn’t recruit Wes Byrum and Auburn got him. This happened next:
Wes Byrum beats Florida

PS he made it extra special by Gator Chomping around the Swamp.

Bad
Tuberville recruiting Phillip Rivers to play tight end.
Also bad
Gus passing on Lamar Jackson.

We had some horrific quarterback play during both those two’s tenure.

Mark Richt thought Deshaun Watson and Cam Newton weren’t good enough to play QB for him.

To be fair, he wanted Watson but it was way too late.

Cam he wanted at TE.

Les Miles made the same mistake with Dak Prescott. A hometown LA kid that supposedly wanted to come to LSU but Les wanted him as a te. We rolled out there with Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris those years. Yuck.

Fulmer recruited Heath Shuler, Peyton Manning and Tee Martin. Could have been worse.

I remember when we fired Will Muschamp and he took the #1 DE recruit with him to Auburn. It made it extra special that he sucked arse.
Good times.

I've heard that Ensminger was the only one on the staff that thought Dak should've played QB. But in Miles and Cameron's system he probably would've flopped anyway.

Bryce Petty and Tajh Boyd were both coming to Tennessee, and Lane told both to frick off.

We are essentially responsible for Clemson being where they are today

Miles wanted him as like the 3rd TE in that class. Ugh. Definitely don't miss that.

Stafford was a true freshman during his recruitment so that didn’t seem like a bad idea at the time.

Wasn't Tee Higgins a Tennessee commit? Funny how they think it's low character to take visits while committed but go ahead and recruit other schools' commits, see also Malcolm Greene with LSU last year

Auburn has whiffed on many over the years but recruiting is an inexact science.

Ahh nothing like rooting for a 17-18 year old kid to fail because of his college choice!

It was merely an observation, Mr. Cowart. No need to get defensive.

Nutt:

Bad - missing out on eastern Arkansas players. Fat fulmer built a pipeline to that part of the state.

Good - everyone is going to say DMAC but that's a given. I'm going to say recruiting Jamaal Anderson (was a wide receiver in high school) and moving him to defensive line. Anderson was a monster.

Petrino:

Bad - not recruiting Kenneth Dixon out of Strong, Arkansas. Opted for a bigger back from Oklahoma who didn't even register a stat here.

Good - getting the bulk of highly recruited instate guys (outside of Dyer) to stay home.

Bielema:

Bad - Not recruiting Damarea Crockett. Crockett was willing to play linebacker as long as he could be a Razorback. Funny enough we never had to endure Crockett rushing for 300 plus yards against us because he was always injured or suspended by the time our game with mizzou rolled around.

Good -

Frank Ragnow. Getting Ragnow to come all the way to Arkansas from Minnesota was an impressive feat. Beat Florida State for his commitment as well. Losing Sam Pittman brought an end to the Bielema era because after he left the days of Ragnow, Skipper, and Kirkland coming to Arkansas was gone.

Morris:

Bad - Not recruiting Jacolby Criswell - 4 star QB from right down the road. Chose to give his midget son a scholarship and pretty much stopped talking to Criswell. Damaged the relationship so much that when Pittman came in he went straight to Criswell's high school and tried to patch things up but it was too late and he signed with North Carolina.

Good - brought in a ton of high quality (big and fast) wide receivers. luckily we kept the wide receiver coach responsible for recruiting that position.

Pittman:

TBD but moving our 2020 recruiting class rank from the 100s to somewhere around 30 was an impressive feat.

Old Piss

Good:
We found this 2 star feller in Bruceton, TN by the name of Patrick Willis.

He is still the player I most respect to ever play for Ole Miss and I hate it for him the teams he played for were so bad. I do however remember whipping Alabama’s arse in 2003 and the game opened with a devastating opening kickoff tackle from this true freshman none of us knew, so at least he was on that team.

Honestly he should be a generic best/worst for both Ole Miss and Tennessee posters. Here’s a quote from ol’ Pat about his recruitment:

quote:

”I was a Vols fan growing up. That was like America’s Team. I wanted to go there so bad. After every game my dad and I would get in the car and drive five hours to go to Knoxville to watch them play on an unofficial visit. This was on our gas money and our time. I just wanted to show them how bad I wanted to be there. I can’t forget being there and you have all these other big-time recruits there and they are shaking their hands and the coaches are talking to them. The coaches never shook my hand. They never talked to me. One day I just got tired of doing that. My senior year, I remember going up and saying, ‘Coach I see all of the other guys getting love. I really want to come here. I’m interested in coming here. Do you have something for me? Maybe a scholarship offer? Maybe something just saying you want me?’ But I didn’t get that. I got, ‘Well you’re having a hard time. We’re recruiting two other linebackers, Ernie Sims and Daniel Brooks. Those are the two guys we want.’

Bad:

I’m not going to put anyone in a specific order, but we whiffed on these native Mississippians over the years for one reason or another as the primary program in this state:

Jerry Rice
Steve McNair
Walter Payton
Brett Favre
I’ll even throw in Marcus Dupree

No excuse to let Dupree leave the state. I don’t give a frick who was bidding on him and for how much. We should have taken a loan straight out of the state treasury

Bad:

Bo Jackson recruitment for FB would have helped BSBall too.

BKBall - Bennie Dees’ wife telling her asst coach husband (Later head coach at Wyoming) on Wimp Sandersons staff “Give the fat kid from Leeds” a scholarship”. My all time favorite gaff.

Good:

Gary Hollingshead came out of nowhere to have a historically great (at thetime) season Passing under Homer Smith‘s tutilage during Gene Stallings era.
