Bryant went to A&M after Kentucky dumbass.
You don’t think that altered the trajectory just a little bit? He could have made Kentucky into what Alabama became if he got the same treatment as Rupp and the basketball program.

Even if you take away Saban and Bryant, Alabama has just as many SEC and national championships as LSU.
Congratulations, OP, you played yourself.

Y’all are completely missing the point. We aren’t talking about the past. We are talking about modern day! Nobody is saying Bama doesn’t have a good program. We are saying the fans got spoiled and thought they would continue on as usual because “you’re Bama” as all of you have said for the last few years. Reality is, you won’t.

People make the brand. It's stupid to say "Saban was Bama". No, every coach and the Alabama teams they coached during their time "was Alabama" at the time they were employed. The accumulation of all the coaches and seasons makes the history and brand of the program. This is the case for all colleges. The program is bigger than Saban, but make no mistake, Saban is on the same side of the ledger as Bryant and all the other winning coaches at Alabama.

Bama will always be a high floor program but in order for them to keep their edge there are things like NIL, transfer portal, and parity they will have to wrap their hands around before they are the standard again. Bama was the standard and that died when Saban left. Eventually Bama will have to prove they are the king of the new way before they become the standard again.

Alabama had a great program prior to Saban however they have really no inherent advantage over any other elite program in modern CFB.
Being a blue blood used to mean something but not so much anymore.
That said, they can live off of the reputation built under Saban for at least a few more years.

Bama has only been elite when it's stolen a coach that it already knew was a sure thing and allowed that coach to operate outside of the bounds of the rules.
It hasn't shown itself to be capable of building from within or competing on a level playing field.
I expect Bama's next move will be to identify a coach that it believes will be head and shoulders above the others. They will spend a ton of money.

How do you think Alabama got both of those coaches?
As Volatile stated, you got the Bear because UK truly doesn't give a shite about football. It's just something they endure as a lead up to basketball season.
You got Saban because he was disillusioned with the NFL and couldn't return to coach LSU because Miles was there with several years left on his contract. Believe me, he would have returned to LSU if the opportunity had presented itself. He had built the program from the ground up and it was his baby.
Now you're without so much as a coach the caliber of Gene Stallings at the helm, and apart from the truly glorious years under The Bear and Saban, Bama has been "good-to-exceptionally-good", but not "great."

It means something. But just being Notre Dame, Southern California, Michigan, and Texas means something too and has been no guarantee of success. With Pete Carroll Southern California was elite. The rest of those programs are still blue chip names but collectively have two national championships in this century.
The likelihood of success for Alabama and others probably depends more than ever on coaching. If Deboer can turn it around Alabama will be fine. Otherwise there's going to be a bit of suffering.

You are sensitive so you focused on the term "stole".
The real point was that they hired a guy that was turnkey and brought the program to them as opposed to a coach who would work within an already existing program.
Compare Bama to the last few champions.
LSU.
LSU has won a title with Les Miles and Ed Orgeron. It's pretty obvious that the program is bringing more to the table than the coach. Hell, its most recent hire was a guy labeled as someone that would never win a championship. It's just a different way of approaching the same problem.
Ohio State
Day grew up in that program.
Michigan
Harbaugh was a Michigan man. Maybe this is closest to the Saban type of hire although not everyone believed it at the time.
Clemson
Dabo obviously built from ground up.
Alabama has succeeded with a certain approach and it will try to do that again.
You would have thought a guy like Deboeur would have been better at Alabama instead of worse. But, that's just not the case.

LSU is what bama thought they were
We have had a legit special person and shrimp boat captain win titles. The program is the prestige
Bama needs a great captain for the ship to work

Would Saban have allowed the players to have a dance off in the locker room after losing to FSU? You would think Bama had won the game.

Saban literally fell into Alabama’s lap by dumb luck. He was a NC winning coach at a conference rival who had NFL aspirations. After a very short failed attempt at the NFL Saban came back on the open market right as Alabama was firing a failed coach.
