Theres not a whole lot more to the story. It's pretty simple.
They had big drama. They had fvcked and ended up hating each other. Welcome to college.
The drama got heavy and he confronted her in public. She called him a bunch of shite including the n word, spit in his face and then hit him.
He snapped and decked her.
I'm assuming she wanted him to assault her so he would get in trouble and that's why she assaulted him. We all know how this games works. She got more than she bargained for obviously.
Not only did he take the bait and hit her after she slapped him he hit her so hard he literally broke her face.
That's what happened. Judge him however you want but it wasnt complicated.

No, you should tell him that society doesn't hold women accountable for being violent, so be very careful. Never retaliate because men who do so are always in the wrong no matter how violent the woman was toward him.
