No. 1964 and 1973 are legit poll national championships.

Bama is not the only team to have won national championships and lost their bowl game.

1950 NC Oklahoma lost to Bear Bryant's Kentucky in the Sugar Bowl, but OU was awarded the AP & UPI title before the bowl and they count it.

1951 NC Tennessee lost to Maryland in the Sugar Bowl; but Tennessee was awarded the AP & UPI title before the bowl and they count it even though Maryland was undefeated.

1960 Minnesota lost a regular season game to Purdue and lost the Rose Bowl to Washington, going 8-2, but was awarded the AP & UPI NC before the bowl game and they count it. Even though Ole Miss went 10-0-1 and won their bowl game, they were awarded the FWAA title just like Arkansas.

The AP and the UPI use to award their titles before the bowls since there were only a few bowl games in those days, they were more exibition games.

Bama has legit claims to the AP and UPI titles they were awarded.

This post will definitely rustle a few jimmies with the Bammer haters

I just wish that the person who made fun of Rich Rodriguez's wife, would've never been born.

I remember the day RR was announced - I was sitting in ATL airport on my way to Cabo for a week long vacation. I read that RichRod had accepted the Bama HC job. I didn't think too highly of the hire, and was mainly looking forward to enjoying warm & sunny Cabo in December.

When I got back in the states a week later and read the headlines, I was in shock that he'd turned down the job. I cursed Mal Moore for days, and honestly felt like he was an inept idiot. I later had to repent for cursing Mal.

I'm far from a Bama hater. I respect the hell out of the program and I appreciate Bama being the cornerstone for great football on the SEC. It's the ignorant fans that most people hate. We all have them, but it seems Bama's are more vocal.

I agree. While we might not like how the season ended. That's the way they chose the NC back then and have to respect it. The only ones I think Bama shouldn't claim are the one that were retro actively claimed using a poll that wasn't even in existence until a decade after the games were played. That's absurd.

i'd honestly say LSU fans are the most vocal, perhaps in the nation....

but i mean, we're like two doors down from y'all geographically compared most other teams/fanbases etc... we got some vocal mofo's. and you can hear me or not here, but i personally believe most of those people were born in the post Bear era where Auburn beat us more often than not and we did nothing until Stallings, which was short lived and then we took a drop into the pure abyss after Stallings left until Saban.

this created a TON of Bama fans that still somehow convinced themselves that we WERE a better team or program than most of the rest of the nation.... like nothing was going on. almost pure denial... i say almost because deep down they all knew how bad things really were and wanted to smash everyone that contradicted how excellent "we still were."

it would be a lot like ruling the whole world, and then having it pulled from you as easy as.... it takes for one man to retire and die.

Does any fanbase use the term "we" more than Bama?

Again Bama isn't the only school to do this. And actually, the NCAA uses a couple retroactive polls in their list of recognized national titles for back then.

Alabama started the season ranked #l in the AP. USC pre season ranked #9.

Bama's only loss that year was to #7 USC

This is where you should have stopped writing. You can't "excuse" away what was written. Bama and USC finished the season with the same record.

USC beat Bama H2H. Case closed.

So, in fact you can be "voted" into the SECCG.

When did that happen?

quote:

An actual example of this occurring was the 2008 Big 12 season. TTU, TEX, and OU all tied for 1st in the Big 12 South.

Ahh, right, in the Big 12. You're just arguing for argument sake. The SECCG is not voted on. It is won by a team who got there by winning on the field. A team who won their division. A team who then beats the other division winner. That is an SEC Champion. You guys are a joke trying to pass off the SECCG like it's meaningless.

The same rules apply in the SEC, dumbass. In the event of a 3 way tie, the BCS absolutely is used in determining who goes to the SECCG. It almost happened in 2011 (if Arkansas beat LSU in the last game, there would have been a 3 way tie with the 3 teams only losses in conference being to each other.....then the BCS standing would have come into play)

You don't read very well, do you? USC did beat Alabama early in the season. Bama dropped in the polls below USC. Then USC got beat by an unranked team which dropped them below Alabama. Alabama did not lose another game for USC to jump us.

Other teams above Alabama and USC did lose which helped Bama to go to #2 and USC to #3.

Alabama played and defeated the #1, only unbeaten team in the nation to become #1... AP, FWAA, NFF, NCF, and a few others voted for Alabama.

USC played and defeated the #5, 1-loss Michigan team... and won on a controversial play. So USC jumped to #2 in the AP... UPI, SR and a few others voted for USC.

Bama's 1978 AP national championship is legit.

I agree. That's why Saban was the perfect hire for Bama. He had the hardware and the balls to come in and tell people at Bama that tradition only means so much. He made Bama upgrade their facilities( which were probably in the bottom half of the SEC if we're being honest) and instilled a mindset of what have you done for me lately and made people realize that titles won in the 70's ,didn't mean crap to 99% of today's recruits. Saban and Bama are a PERFECT MATCH(which is why , IMO, he stay there until he retires). Bama fans want excellence from their football program and Saban expects excellence from hisself and his team. He has a chance to go down as the greatest CFB coach of all time. If he wins one more National title, IMO it will put him at #1. To win 5 titles in , say a 14 year span from LSU to Bama, would be far more Impressive than what Bear did. Saban is doing it during the sec's greatest era of football. Lets be honest ,Bear had built in advantages that Saban doesn't. No scholly limit and he also had the recruiting advantage of being one of the VERY FEW southern teams on TV consistently. That was a huge deal back then. Also the parity in CFB has never been as widespread as it is now.

Disagree for sure, but most of the rest of that yup... but our fans and admin have ALWAYS been a "what have you done for me lately" mentality. If anything, he has made us ease up on that. If he went 8-4, we would be FAR from calling for his head. That's a fact.

If he wins one this year making a 3 peat, it would be Saban's 5th NC in his last 9 college seasons as head coach.

A national title 56% of the time.
