Alabama vs. Ohio State will be the 23rd installment of a true National Championship Game which began with the BCS Era in 1998. It's surprising that this will be the first time Alabama and Ohio State have met in a National Championship Game considering they both now rank #1 and #2 for most National Championship Game Appearances.
Overall, 17 programs have played for the National Championship during this era. They are below, sorted by most appearances:
8- Alabama (2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020)
5- Ohio State (2002, 2006, 2007, 2014, 2020)
4- Florida State (1998, 1999, 2000, 2013)
4- Oklahoma (2000, 2003, 2004, 2008)
4- LSU (2003, 2007, 2011, 2019)
4- Clemson (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019)
2- Miami (2001, 2002)
2- USC (2004, 2005)
2- Texas (2005, 2009)
2- Florida (2006, 2008)
2- Auburn (2010, 2013)
2- Oregon (2010, 2014)
1- Tennessee (1998)
1- Virginia Tech (1999)
1- Nebraska (2001)
1- Notre Dame (2012)
1- Georgia (2017)
The only programs out of the 17 Elites without an appearance are Michigan and Penn State. The two non-elites to make an appearance are Virginia Tech and Oregon.
We're running out of opportunities for a new program to make the National Title Game. From 1998-2006, we saw 9 consecutive years of at least one program making their first appearance in a Title Game.
1998- Tennessee/Florida State
1999- Virginia Tech
2000- Oklahoma
2001- Miami/Nebraska
2002- Ohio State
2003- LSU
2004- USC
2005- Texas
2006- Florida
Since then, we've seen 14 Championship Games with only 6 new programs added who played in their first title game:
2009- Alabama
2010- Auburn/Oregon
2012- Notre Dame
2015- Clemson
2017- Georgia
2020 now makes 3 consecutive Title Games without a program making their first appearance... the longest drought without a new program since the era began. This could go on a very long time too because I don't see any other programs joining the group soon.

Current All-Time AP Rank of the Best Programs to never make a Title Game:
#4 Michigan
#9 Penn State
#17 UCLA
#18 Michigan State
#20 Arkansas
#21 Wisconsin
#22 Washington
I guess based on historical success, these would be your next most likely programs to make a Title Game.

Is it just me or does it seem like Oklahoma has played in the title game a lot more than 4 times?

I don't care what anybody says: 2010's college football season culminating with Auburn (hadn't been there in forever) and Oregon (hadn't been there ever) in the championship game was the cherry on top of the most fun seasons in college football.
Also, it's just more fun when both the teams are undefeated.

They've been in the Playoffs a lot but they never make the title game.

They've finished 3rd/4th in 2015, 17, 18 and 19. So they were contending, but didn't cross the line of playing for it.
To be fair, OU had probably proven to be a top 4-caliber team those years. Just not top 2-caliber

Damn. That’s a lot of outliers.

Yeah, seems like it. They found success in their first appearance, but have since laid an egg every time they make the Title Game or the Playoff
2000- Title Game- WON
2003- Title Game- LOST
2004- Title Game- LOST
2008- Title Game- LOST
2015- Playoff Semi- LOST
2016- Playoff Semi- LOST
2018- Playoff Semi- LOST
2019- Playoff Semi- LOST
I mean that record is almost worse than Notre Dame's performance in big games.

Where is aggie? That has got to be a mistake.

Understandable. They've been to the playoff 4 times but never been in the CFP NC game though. 0-4 in the semifinal.
They were in as many BCS title games as anyone (tied with FSU with 4 appearances). They were 1-3 in those games.

There were “true” national title games before the BCS.

No, not really. There were occasional years in which #1 and #2 met in a bowl game, but a lot of times it happened by chance. 1998 was the year CFB finally became dedicated to guaranteeing #1 and #2 met at the end of each season.

So the UF Nebraska Fiesta Bowl doesn’t count?

There is a reason "Big Game Bob" had become "Big Game Boob" by the time he had left.
OU played like a house on fire in big games from 1999-2002. From 2003-2019 not so much. Their bowl record was pretty spectacular before playing LSU in the Sugar Bowl in the 03 season

Sometimes. 1990, 91 and 97 would all like a word with you

When I was looking at OU's BCS/playoff history, I saw a reminder of just how dominant the SEC was in that era particularly the last half.
Overall SEC was 9-2 (with one of those losses actually coming to another SEC team - so the SEC actually only beaten one time in the BCSNC by another conference).
The records for the other conferences:
Big 12: 2-5
ACC: 2-2
Big East: 1-2
Big 10: 1-2
Pac-12: 1-2 (and the one win by USC was later vacated)
Independent: 0-1
Complete domination by the SEC, including the 7 in a row from 2006-2012.
The CFP era hasn't been bad for SEC either:
SEC is 10-4 overall and 3-3 in the NC game (and one of the NC losses was to another SEC team). Three teams represented in the playoff so far.
Other conferences:
ACC: 6-6 (2-2) - 3 teams represented (including ND this year as a temporary ACC member)
Big 10: 3-3 (1-0) - 2 teams represented
Big 12: 0-4 (0-0) - just OU
Pac-12: 1-2 (0-1) - 2 teams represented
Independent: 0-1 (0-0) - ND

Bama with 8 and came very close to 3 more.
08- Undefeated Bama lost SEC Championship Game Semifinal to Florida
13- Undefeated Bama lost Iron Bowl. Bama would have murdered Missouri in the SEC Championship Game
14- Bama Lost semifinal game to Ohio St.

As a LSU fan, I’m still astounded at the level of success our football team has had since 2000. We aren’t Bama and never will be, but I’m sure happy with what has been accomplished.
