South Carolina Gamecocks: 6-6, 3-5 — This is going to be a tough fall for Will Muschamp and the Gamecocks. They're facing the nation's toughest slate, a murderer's row filled with games against nationally-ranked teams and 50-50 matchups elsewhere. There's two games that are must-wins in terms of getting to a bowl game — the opener vs. Mack Brown and North Carolina along with the November tussle with Appalachian State. South Carolina will be favored in both, but that won't be the case in at least five games this fall.
I mean, I know our schedule is tough, but the doomsday predictions have been a bit much. The only real difference in this year's schedule is the addition of Alabama. 1 game.

Eh, I think they get to 7 with the favorable home schedule. This is the most SEC quality depth they’ve ever had on the roster. I don’t see 10 wins but I don’t see a huge drop off either.

I've said since the season ended that the Vols will win 7 next year. Losses will be to Alabama, UGA, UF, MSU, and Mizzou.

I don't think you guys are quite there yet but I do think this game will be MUCH tougher than anyone else seems to believe. Pruitt reminds me of a poor man's kirby in that from the outset here his goal is to play excellent defense, beef up the LOS, and recruit balls out. The overall talent isn't close to where it needs to be yet but there is clearly improvement. Despite the lopsided score last year the game wasn't the runaway that it would suggest. I do think we're much better overall, but playing in knox against a 2nd year program is goign to be tough.
Last time we were there it was 41-0 and things obviously got out of hand but after about the first couple scores the crowd was absolutely non-existent and I think much of that had to do with malaise over butch. EVen if we go up 10-0 or 13-0 this year I still the fans will be into it.

8-4 ain't saving his job
And I know "the money is there", but forking out +/-$40MM to pay a staff not to coach AU is a tough pill to swallow until they have a guarantee they can pull a proven commodity.

And that's the purgatory situation that no school really wants to be in. We had the exact same thing with Richt at the tail end of his career. Gus is going to win at least 8 games every year for AU with a potnetially great season thrown in the mix here and there with ~11 wins but it seems apparent that he's not going ot win a national title.

And we went 7-5
So that one game would be 6-6?

Gus is a good person, he runs a clean program, keeps his players on the right track, he recruits very well, and his program stays out of the eye of the NCAA. At some point in most seasons, he has his team in the championship discussion and many fans are ok with that until they stand back and see what their SEC rivals are doing.

he recruits very well
that's a bit misleading, and again is the exact same argument that can be applied to richt. Richt recruited "well" to the tune of generally a top 10 class but was getting lapped in his own conference. The last 4 classes for Gus:
11th nationally / 6th in SEC / 4th in West
12th nationally / 3rd in SEC / 2nd in West
9th nationally / 4th in SEC / 3rd in West
9th nationally / 5th in SEC / 4th in West
He's averaging a top 10 class, great! But "top 10 class" is largely irrelevant when you're only top ~5 in your own league and hovering around 3rd/4th yearly in your own division.
Furthermore, Gus STILL has not yet shown he can develop a HS QB he's recruited to AU. 2010 success (as OC) was on the back of a generational talent at QB that transferred from JUCO. Early season HC success was again on the back of a JUCO transfer. Then you have a few middling years where he actually had his "own" QB and they weren't any good. We see another blip of big success in 2017 with, you guessed it, a transfer. A transfer mind you that got much worse his 2nd season under Gus's tutelage.

Luke should be fired at that point and not get to finish out the year.
Luke should have never been made HC. Right now, he doesn't have the support from the majority of the fans (he never did). Luke was a very bad OL coach that we wanted fired a long time ago. He doesn't bring anything to the program - he's not a good game day coach, he doesn't have any type of great Xs and Os skills, and is a horribly lazy recruiter. Season ticket sales are at an all time low.
Bjork said he thought the HC position should just be a CEO type of position that is hands off on offense and defense. That may work if that HC was able to recruit - clearly not the case. When Coach O was at Ole Miss, Luke quit the program because (and he was quoted on this) as saying that Orgeron was too demanding of his time in recruiting.
Regardless, Memphis will beat us right out of the gate, and we'll get 0'fer in the SEC and end up with only two wins in the season. My guess is he'll get fired during the season, but be allowed to finish out the season (dumb to let that happen).
I just hope whoever the new AD ends up being will at least go after Bill Clark. That guy is a damn good coach.

I agree with this but no clue on the loss. We haven't gone undefeated in the regular season since Herschel was here so it would be pretty crazy IMO to predict us to go 12-0 until we show we can actually do it. Just like last year, I don't see a team on our schedule that I think we are "worse than" or would point to and say 'yep that's a loss'. So I'll say 11-1 but with no idea who the 1 is. I will say I'd be stunned if it's florida.
Mizzou beats Georgia. Wins the East and in a cruel twist of fate can’t play in the SEC title game. Georgia instead plays in the game, beats Bama and goes on to win the playoffs without even winning their own division.
