When do we get to cut a guy for dropping too many passes or failing to make the 2-deep by his sophomore year, or hurting his knee?
Fun Fact ... college scholarships were always renewable on an annual basis, at the discretion of the school. Yet, back in the day, the player was expected to uphold a four year commitment.
Your favorite school, whatever it is, has always had the option of cutting any kid ... just because he sucked. It was a bad look, sure. But Big Time Football School always had the option. You think coaches never threatened under-performing kids with that ?
We're all lionizing Mike Leach this weekend. There's a prominent YouTube video where he tells the entire Texas Tech locker room that they'll either play better, or everyone of their asses will hit the road.

Pittman on NIL " I still don't believe in buying players.. I want players to want to come to the University... it's heading to a disturbing place."
The last salary year I could find for Sam Pittman was $3.75 million. Do you think he's coaching at Arkansas because he just loves Fayetteville so much ?
Honestly, the hypocrisy of coaches with two commas in their yearly salary, pissing and moaning about players only doing it for the money, gets pretty old.

And that option was basically never used. More common was trying to get them to take a medical scholarship, even though as you say they could have just taken the option to drop them.

So we're making progress. You admit that the schools didn't like the look of running a player off, so they just pressured him into taking a medical redshirt.
The facts remain. Schools always had the option of dropping a kid, every single year. Rick Pitino, in that sport between bowl season and spring practice, ran more than one kid out of UK for simply not performing to expectation.
And sainted Mike Leach ... a guy I liked, by the way ... can be seen telling the entire locker room in that "frick You, frick Me" viral video ... that they'll either play better or lose their scholarship. Don't tell me it was some third rail, never to be stepped upon.

quote:They are recruiting specialists in the recruiting department. Every SEC school (and most major college football programs) have them. There are TONS of people who operate behind the scenes who you would never have a clue that they existed. LSU directory
I'm aware that there's recruiting administrators, multiple analyst and then assts that are assigned territories/athletes...not recruiting "departments" What exactly were their supposed titles?
Scroll down to the football section. Look how many staffers there are listed. LSU has 6 people listed solely in a "recruiting" position. Now add about 20 more that aren't in the directory.
quote:I had friends who attended various SEC schools. Some of those friends, including some friends from my school (LSU) decided to go into the recruiting department. I mean having 5 friends who are within a year of me in age going into college football is not some crazy statistic. 3 were recruiting specialists and 2 were GAs. They chose to skip the highschool route because that is a MUCH longer route.
So your little circle of college friends all just happen to start off in "recruiting departments" in the same time frame at various SEC schools? Did they play CFB? Skip the GA route? Didn't coach HS? What an amazing coincidence. What are the odds?
I never said these people were my best friends, nor did i say they were in my "little circle of friends". I grew up playing competitive sports my entire life, year round. There just happened to be guys I considered friends entering the job market when recruiting was really starting to blow up from a budgetary standpoint from the schools, so they beefed up their recruiting department.
Those guys decided to go into CFB coaching. Some led on campus visits, some scouted and watched film of high school players and put in their input on who received offers, and some were GAs who did more on field coaching.
quote:Because I don't want to get guys I know in trouble
So why don't you name him?

You don't have to believe me. I am just repeating what I have been told by both athletes (former recruits) and recruiters.

Oh, so we’re good with paying players. Just so long as it isn’t too much.
You reward coaches to the tune of $11 million per & rake in billions, and then tell the ones who actually won the game, “here’s a couple hundred bucks. Go have a nice dinner on us.”
Do you know how much a scholarship, room and board, healthcare, stipends, gym access, personal training, wardrobe, travel and airfare, etc. etc. etc. adds up to after four years? More than a "couple hundred bucks"? Most of their fellow student peers on campus who don't have the luxury of a free ride will be in debt for half their lives just over tuition alone...
Coaches are employees who sign mutli-year contracts and can be fired and also forced to owe their respected schools a lot of money if they elect to leave for greener pastures on their own accord. If you want student athletes to be treated like coaches, then first and foremost, say goodbye to the NFL because college ball is about to become their profession...
Hell, why we're at it, let's reward students with the same amount of $ their professors are earning!

Pittman is correct.
The soul of it is going, going gone....
Why did Pittman accept a huge raise if you think it is going to be gone because of only players were getting huge deals and not the coaches?

Athletic scholarships shouldn’t exist anymore they are being paid and should be able to be fired on a day to day bases.

The Jermaine Burton transfer was the one that opened my eyes to how little it all actually means to these guys. For the most part, they're hired mercenaries who could not give any less of a shite about the school once they leave.

The complete brain dead idiots running college sports can only blame themselves.

But nah, yall wanted your NCAA vidya game so badly that we had to pay the poor lil ol players getting exploited by EA sports and now look where we are
You are frickin way off here bub.
Big12 just signed a 6 year $2.2 BILLION contract.
The ACC gets about $240 million annually from ESPN.
The Pac 12 gets a $2.3 BILLION contract in 2025 (63% of that is from ESPN).
The Big 10 gets 7 year $7 BILLION contract starting next year.
The SEC has a 10 year, $3 billion contract with ESPN starting in 2024.
But yeah lets keep this antiquated notion that these young adults shouldn't get any slice of that pie. Getting a free education shouldn't be put into the equation, when we talking about these massive numbers made mostly off footballer's. Look at all these schools who is already using football revenue to subsidize the other sports, like that chick who got millions in NIL as a gymnast. No way she would ever get that type of money if it was just based off revenue from gymnastics.
So don't even act like all this NIL is because of EA sports. Colleges are the ones exploiting the players. Plus look what happened with Todd Gurley and getting suspended for signing his name.

Contracts will be here shortly with all these kids leaving after one year. You want your NIL money? You get it in year 3

Jermaine burton was committed to LSU for a long time. Then out of nowhere, and without warning, he committed to Georgia. Then he leaves Georgia following a national championship and playing time to go to bama, the team they’d just beat in the championship. There is no loyalty. I think this is a good part of the reason why so many no longer want to go to bowl games. Why should I, a fan, spend my time and money going to support my team if the best players don’t care at all?
Posted on 12/17/22 at 8:20 am to hawgfaninc
Does that mean that from now on at the NFL combine, teams will not only look at a player’s 40 yd dash time but also their ROI based on their NIL?

Posted on 12/17/22 at 8:24 am to WG_Dawg
This was gonna happen with or without EA sports.
