I think it's a very good hire. Not sure about his recruiting, but he is a good coach

This. At ISU, he pulled off 1 big upset a year, but did not have the horses to extend the success any more than that.

Hope he has something to work with. Seemed Arky's fans loved Smith when he had some players, and hated him this year after those players graduated.

He's a good defensive coach. Should be able to hold Auburn under 500 yards rushing

Actually did okay his one season as DC, but under the circumstances (Tubs mailing it in, the disastrous Franklin Experiment, Kodi Burns showing Kiehl Frazier and Jeremy Johnson how to fail to live up to recruiting hype) it's difficult to really judge how he would do in a 'normal' situation in the SEC.

tl;dr, your defense won't be as laughable in 2017 as it was in 2016. But I don't know how much of a difference that will make in your record.

Speaking of records - in Chizik's only two seasons at ISU, he went 5-19. In Rhoads last two seasons (his 6th and 7th at Ames) he also went 5-19. So you probably don't have to worry about him jumping ship for another HC job.

should of hired DC from Wazzu

already SEC ties, and turned a steaming shite pile of a defense into a team who had a shot at Pac12 division.

Auburn was awful in general that year. That was the Franklin Spread Eagle offense year where you guys beat State 3-2 right?

Yea, Arky was just dying to hang onto Robb Smith...

Smith was the best DC in the country before last year happened?

On a serious note...are you really switching to a 3-4? Expect a steep learning curve. Would be pretty stupid for a coach working his way onto the hot seat.

Yeah, but the defense was actually good and kept us in most games. We only lost 3 games by more than 4 points that year.

And to be fair about the 3-2 game, Auburn's offense actually scores all 5 points. Holding call by Ryan Pugh in the end zone for the safety

I honestly didn't know he was a 3-4 guy. We didn't run the 3-4 in 08. That being said our defense was good that year. The offense put all the pressure on the defense to keep the games close and outside of the Bama game they did that.

Not a bad hire, doubt they could have gotten anyone to outside the program to sign on at this point.

I guess Bert claims switching to a 3-4 is a possibility...i really dont give a shite i'm just tired of seeing a baby shite soft defense.

Yea arky and everyone else were pretty impressed after that first year, I think most kind of hoped last year was an anomaly, and waited until this year to make a judgement. Didn't take long into the season to see which RS defense was the anomaly and which was the norm.

That wasn't his fault

Your defense that year only gave up 18 points per game(14th in nation). Ranked in the top 30 overall in total defense.

He did pretty well considering how shitty Auburns offense was that season and how much time his defense spent on the field.

Given the cluster that year, he did pretty well.

Like I said, I think he will do well. Did he work with the secondary this past season?

Guy is intense. I think you need a coach like that when you are consistently playing opponents who outrank you in talent. I am hesitant to think he will make your defense elite, but if he can make it above average and Arkansas gets back to controlling the clock on offense, it could work very well. Sort of the opposite of what happened when he was at AU. We could not get the D off the field for more than a few plays.

Yes. The one year improvement there was very noticeable.

Yea. You guys that season ranked 100+ in offense.

Have tried to erase it from my memory tbh... that and one other season...

3-2 felt like an all time low to be a fan.

Again, I think he can compliment Arkansas well, if they get back to controlling the clock on offense. I still do not quite understand how Arkansas got so far away from their identity on offense.
