OU may build a new BB arena; meanwhile, UGA's Stegeman Coliseum is literally falling apart

UGA's Stegeman (below pic) is 60 years old and it's been closed ever since concrete began falling down from the ceiling down onto the court and stands. Stegeman could be closed for months, reports say.
In the meantime, Oklahoma's AD announced they may be building a new arena for basketball. Psssssssst, UGA AD --- we need a new one, too!

Why does Georgia even have a basketball program? They’ve never been successful in it and they don’t put money into it. Looks like just another way to grab money from the conference network deals and use that for football.
Just give up the sport already.

The problem is that it isn’t really all that terrible but it’s quite far from great, too.
A lot of it has to do with program perception; we would love the place if we won there consistently but we don’t so it just looks inadequate instead of unique. Much like baseball, the facility is fine in a vacuum but reflects a lack of institutional investment and commitment to success relative to the teams around us

I have heard UGA fans, when talking about Stegeman, make the comparison to Auburn, who was for years and years UGA's compatriot at the bottom of the SEC standings, and point out that Auburn's rapid ascent as a basketball program coincided with their building of a new arena, and that UGA needs to do the same to have a similar ascent.
They're right, to a degree. Auburn didn't become a near yearly NCAA Tournament particiant because they built a new arena, but because they began to take basketball seriously, invested in it, hired the right coach, and started signing the players you need to become a good program.
Auburn's new arena was just one part of a larger program to invest into basketball and to become competitive. At this point, UGA probably does need new, 21st Century facilities, to become competitive. But it needs more than that. It needs the right coach (the jury is still out on White) and it needs to build an infrastructure to create and support a competitive basketball program, including marketing, outreach, connections with AAU, and of course NIL.
Historically, UGA's athletic department hasn't wanted to make the necessary investments into the basketball program. I personally would like to see that change, but a lot of UGA fans just do not care about basketball. I have actually spoken to some over the years that seem openly hostile toward basketball and the idea of UGA trying to become good. That would change if we started winning, though.

First time I’ve seen the exterior. I really like it. It could be something really special if the right amount of resources were committed.

No he sucks. Just not as bad as Matt McMahon. If he couldn’t win at Florida he’s not going to win at fricking Georgia

Not sure if y’all realize or not, but the first coach Auburn hired after building Neville Arena was Tony Barbee. It opened in 2010.

UGA has been pretty good in everything other than men’s bball. They need to fire Strickland and get a serious about baseball again.

UGA fans relax our current basketball stadium hosted Elvis in concert thats how old it is… the new arena talks are heating up but for two years it’s not gone more than talking to city. It’s going to happen even though it makes no sense to put 9.5 mil into the LNC for private suites unless they are going to be there for a few years more (or they are going to use the old basketball aren for another sport) Every major sports in women’s and men’s will have fully upgraded facilities if Basketball gets completed. 275 mil today just for new football training and operations center , 48 mil for softball , 20 for baseball . Our baseball fields are not on any grand sec level but the extra money will help for some upgrades to the new park.
