They left because all the SWC schools were on probation except Arkansas and Rice. So yes it was about the money as the conference could collapse.
But Arkansas was tired of being the outsider in an all Texas conference long before that and tried to join the Big 8.

This will be the first time in their history that they'll play against competition that recruits just as well or better. The talent disparity between Texas and their conference opponents is gone. Texas recruits Top 5 classes every year while the rest of the Big12 struggles to break the Top 25 at times (OU being the lone exception, which explains why that series has been one-sided the past 20 years).
The hand picked refs are gone. The conference showing them favoritism is gone. The massive revenue disparity is gone. Texas played itself

Yeah, from his interview it was about seeking a stable conference for his program.
If texas and aggie left the swc we would have been hung out to dry. He did a historically great job of finding us a new home.
