Majors would have had at least 2 titles

Had Majors stuck around, every good assistant coach we had at the time was leaving (Cutcliffe and Fulmer would’ve gone to Auburn iirc).

Phil taking over was the absolute best case scenario for VOLS at that time

Still not sure how this wasn’t PI when he’s holding his arms down lol. Pretty sad that 80% of those were during the Morris era

They publicly “made up” but honestly probably not. It sucks he never could let it go as Majors and Phil were the faces of VOLS football for multiple generations. He can blame Phil all he wanted but I’ve heard he not only lost the team after squandering games to SCe and Hawgs in ‘92 but also had severely pissed off some major donors. Getting worked over by Bama constantly in the post-Bear years also started wearing thin at that time iirc

And as SandMountainDValues said, anyone worth a shite on the staff was going to follow Phil to Auburn. It sucks Johnny handled it the way he did but Dickey 100% made the right decision with the hot shot up and comer OC who was also a Tennessee man waiting in the wings.

That's just sad, two Vol legends. One would think he could move on after all those years.

One travesty is that Majors isn't in the hall of fame as a coach. He made Iowa State relevant (took them to their first bowl game if I'm not mistaken) and rebuilt Pitt and Tennessee.

Yeah Majors not being in the HOF is a joke for the reasons you said. VOLS football was in a bad, bad place when Johnny came back home. He was one of the elite program builders of his time. Inconsistency once he rebuilt Tennessee was really the only knock you could give him as a coach imo

He didn’t just rebuilt Pitt, he won a national title there. Talk about a program that will never get back to that level of play. He handed the keys to a Ferrari over to Jackie Sherrill.

I still don’t know how Tennessee lost to Memphis that year.

I am NOT about to disparage King Johnny (rip) but goodness what a silly post.

Johnny would've had both Phil and Chavis calling plays on either side so I'm not really seeing the OP's point....

Just watched a Tom Rinaldi piece on Brandon Burlsworth, the Arky guard that tripped up Stoerner. Very sad story. Should've seen it coming. It was a fricking Rinaldi piece.

Dude was overlooked in HS, walks-on at AR.Earns a scholarship. Becomes a starter, then All-SEC, then All-American. Runs a 4.88 at the NFL Combine. Gets drafted 63rd overall by the Colts. 11 days later, gets killed in a car crash on his way to pick up his mother to go to church.

I honestly don't remember this happening. Sad story.

This was the first Razorback game as a kid that I can remember sitting down and being genuinely excited to watch.

It really set the tone for the rest of my life.

Even if we won that game, Nutt would have club dub all week long and lose to Miss st. by three TDs. Nutt couldn't handle success for very long.

In case you missed it in 1998.

Screw up by the officials set it all up.

quote:

The foulup came a bit earlier in the fourth quarter when Arkansas snapped the ball over the punter's head. The errant snap was lying on the 10-yard line when punter Chris Akin decided to kick it out of the end zone. It was ruled a safety, trimming the Arkansas lead to 24-22 with 2:56 remaining.

There was a flag for illegal kicking, and the NCAA rule is 15 yards and loss of the down from the spot of the foul. Tennessee should have been given the option of taking the 2-point safety or taking the penalty and getting the ball at the Arkansas 5 - half the distance to the goal line.

The Safety that UT got against Arkansas made the score Arkansas 24 - Tennessee 22 (with just under 3 minutes left) was a missed call by the refs. UT should have had the option to get the ball at the Arkansas 5 yard line down 24-20. They already showed that Arkansas couldn't stop Travis Henry, and UT had completely shut Arkansas down after the first 3 minutes of the second half.

Arkansas could have beaten any team that season. Inexplicable how they lost that Tennessee game and then that State game

Danny Ford left Nutt with a loaded team. Ford was begging to let him have another year because he knew what he had coming back. But Nutt as usual didn't take advantage of it.

There is a movie on Netflix called Greater about Burlsworth. The Burlsworth Foundation still takes kids in disadvantaged situations to their first Razorback game and they all wear the glasses he was known for. It's a pretty cool experience for them, they all get shown on the video board and get autographs from players.

Would love to know what the payout was for that play. You know, once the statute of limitations expires. I hope Clint made some major bank.

Yep!

But in fairness, we didn't know that, yet, because Nutt had yet to lose a game. We still could have won the SEC-W after losing to Tennessee, but Nutt wasn't ready for that much success, yet.
