Ole Miss fans, tell me about John Rhys Plumlee (baseball)

Im excited to watch this guy play baseball, how has he looked so far, any scrimmage notables or stats? What are yalls expectations for him this season?

I haven't seen any stats on him yet in practice. Did see a clip of him on Twitter stealing a base during a scrimmage. I imagine he'll end up snagging a bunch of bases this year.

Ealy has been roping the ball pretty well so far. He's ahead of Plumlee, as far as developed talent. Our OF is going to be very fast this season.

I watched Ealy play baseball at Prep a few times. He was about the 6th best hitter on that team. Granted, they have multiple SEC commits, but I was never terribly impressed with his hitting.

I don't know much about either Ole Miss player. I do know that Hampton is a stud.

Never personally seen him play but I lived in Hattiesburg while he was in high school and worked with a guy that had a son playing at Petal (Oak Grove's cross town rival)
According to him JRP was always a better football player. Said he never really looked like a natural in baseball and was able to get by on his insane athleticism. Said things like he didn't track fly balls very well. He'd get there due to his speed but would arrive on routine balls at the last minute and dropped more than an outfielder should that hit his glove. His averaged indicates he's a pretty good hitter, but who know how many of those were infield/bunt singles that were base hits in high school and will be outs in the SEC

Ealy was the #12 overall player by Perfect Game and would have been a 1st round pick if he hadn't told teams he was playing football.

Bottom line, dude is a tool freak
Plumlee wasn't nearly as highly regarded as a baseball player. Perfect game ranked him the #92 best incoming freshman in the SEC this year (Ealy was #1).

I hope he can throw a baseball better than he can a football. Also he's really fast.

I know his family...he didn’t tell them he was playing football. If he’d gone in the first three rounds, he was gone. He struggled mightily at the plate his senior year.
That said, we played well against high level competition the summer before in Chicago.
He’s definitely elite in the outfield and on the base path.
He’ll be a bottom of line-up hitter at Ole Miss this year and a liability at the plate. (Though nowhere near Hal Hughes level liability).

Interesting
My guess is, based on everything I read about him (which was a lot because I was really curious about him during the draft) is that he was insanely toolsy and pretty raw.
Those tool stats tell me that's probably the case (not even including speed but the other, baseball specific traits like exit velo and arm strength). From what you've said it sounds like he probably hadn't entirely harnessed all that stuff yet.
It will be interesting to see how much he is able to grow when he really isn't even able to participate in fall workouts. Will be tough to develop a whole lot.
