1. SEC - Perfectly contiguous footprint with no gaps. Every state except for South Carolina shares a border with at least 2 other SEC states.

2. Big 10- Perfectly contiguous with no gaps, but has 3 states that only border 1 fellow Big 10 state (Nebraska, Maryland, New Jersey).

3. ACC- Break in the footprint between Virginia & Pennsylvania. States are still generally clustered near each other, however.

4. Pac 12- Technically no gaps, but Nevada creates a large void in the center that is hard to ignore.

5. Big 12- Looks like a hodgepodge of states. 2 states that are completely isolated from the rest. West Virginia extremely out of place.

I’ve never thought about that.
But it is kinda odd that UNLV isn’t PAC 12.

Technically, you are right about Maryland and New Jersey, but that's a bit trivial. The two states are separated by about 20 miles of Delaware.

I know PAC-12 fans are very timid in their support for their schools relative to other conferences, but this map really shows the distance fans and teams have to travel to get from one to the other. There are quite a few schools that are 1100+ miles away from each other. I think the SEC only has two - SC to A&M and UF to Mizzou are barely over 1,000.

West Virginia should be in the ACC. They should have taken Maryland's place when they left.

Nevada doesn't have a legit D1 school, so nothing the PAC 12 can do about that.

It must suck to be a West Virginia fan. Makes road games nearly impossible to attend.

Considering the quality of play in the Pac 12, I dont see that as a hurdle for UNLV or Nevada.

True. Nonetheless, they do not border and I am a trivial man.

Big 10 is contiguous, but that is a pretty long way from Nebraska to New Jersey.

Very true. At their closest point, Nebraska to New Jersey is 1,046 miles. By comparison, Missouri to Florida is 366 miles.

The Pac8 made geographic sense, although there was some long hauls there too.

The PAC12 schools are in the most beautiful part of the country, so that's the trade off.

The Big 12 has declined, to say the least

No doubt. Their original footprint dominated the central United States.

Actually, the state of Iowa was part of the original Big 8 and former Big 12 (Iowa State).

They're moving their conference championship game to LV. I'd say Nevada is pretty much in the Pac-12's footprint.

As an old Pac-8 guy, I am still trying to come to grips with adding UA and ASU. If you had no intentions of doing anything at college, ASU was at the top of your list. They were the Delta house of colleges in the west. Hell, they probably still are.
