Did this really happen? I was doing a take home exam for the last 4 hours.

John L Smith? Really? I realize it's short notice, but goddamn.

Yep. Long will continue to look for a full-time replacement during this season, from what I understand.

If this is the case, then John L. Smith is a certifiable retard. You leave a head coaching job at your alma mater for 1 season, only to have to look for another job in 10 months.

He's getting close to retirement, and would have never gotten an opportunity like this had it not been for the crazy events. How could he not take this job? It's a dream come true for him, really.

Why would you announce it as an interim position? Terrible for recruiting.

"Hey Mr 5.7 3-star player come to Arkansas and play for me er, um, nevermind not sure if any of us will be here next year."

That's why I was thinking it was a terrible decision. Either promote an assistant and give him a legit chance to lose the interim label, or hire someone who is going to be there long term.

Doing that would not answer the recruits' questions about our future any better...

Would have been nice, but just wasn't the right option right now with the combination of a limited pool of available coaches + the ability of this team to have a great 2012 if things are kept in place.

Petrino was an assistant under John L. Smith's teams at Idaho, Utah State, and Louisville. That's one of the reasons Bobby hired him out of retirement at Arkansas. I think he'll be a good choice if he lets our assistants do their job, and I'm thinking that's one of the reasons he was hired.

I am a little shocked by this. If he beats Alabama and LSU at home this year I will

Personally, they could have got Ron Zook, he can recruit at least for 1 year.
