Or the tacklers could just pay attention.

The problem is that the runner gave himself up. With the way the rules are now, defenders are scared to hit someone who does this. He just stood there and tensed up as if to say “I quit”. The refs should have probably blew the play dead unless they discussed it with the refs before hand.

I’m pretty certain the defenders are taught to watch the returner. Their fault for either not paying attention or the coaches fault for not teaching.

And you play until you hear a whistle.

Simple as that.

TCU pulled a pretty good one on tOSU on a KO return but screwed it up because of a forward lateral or illegal forward pass.

One of the KO returners laid down flat in the back corner of the endzone and hid. Ball was KO'd to the other side of the field and the returner fielded it and when the rush got to him he passed the ball to the now erect and running up the far sideline returner. He went all the way but it was technically a forward pass because he did not throw the ball backward in relation to the field. It was pretty close.

I think it should have counted as a fair catch.
He "gave himself up" and could have gotten really hurt had a defender blasted him.

Heck, if a defender had blasted him they would have probably gotten a PF.

I hear you, but there is nothing more Arkansas than giving up a TD like that.

I agree. But it's North Texas and they did it to Arkansas. So lulz.

IF teams started trying this trickery then we would have far too much of this.....

There will eventually be some kind of indicator once the fair catch is called. A whistle or flag or something. The line will get much thinner between being able to hit them and not.

He actually waved his hand a little which probably threw off some of the defenders.

Thought it was funny, but when another team takes his head off on a punt return, he had it coming.

I think y'all are being a little overdramatic about this.

He gave himself up. Forward progress had ceased. It was cheap as hell.
