75th probably had to do with this is the first year the NCAA called the women's tournament March Madness because of that viral video last year of the women having a fitness center that looked worse than something at a nursing home

I think it's an open question whether college baseball would get comparable or better numbers with an equivalent media push. I still think CBB is a fairly bad product so it's hard to be confident (but WBB is a horrendous product, so there is that). College softball is probably the best of the three as far as actual entertainment value.

This is the first year I can think of that the womens bracket did include madness. Several double digit seeds winning multiple games.

isnt that a good thing that they push it? obviously my team is really good now, but ive really enjoyed watching womens basketball. The fact the tournament actually had some upsets was a good thing for the sport.

Good numbers for the sport. ESPN certainly is pushing it. Makes sense to go all in on a sport with built in fan bases rather than the WNBA or whatever failing women’s professional soccer league is ongoing .

Europe is going all in on women’s soccer through their clubs, further making women’s college basketball the safest bet

Soccer is the most boring venue on television followed closely by golf.

soccer is the most popular sport on the planet and both sports are played everywhere in the world. That's why they thrive. And golf didn't thrive in the media like it does now until Tiger Woods.

It's a mediocre product unfortunately.

It's no more a mediocre product than any other amateur sport sans maybe football. It just happens to be a regional sport largely due to weather. Outside the west coast and southeast, the rest of the country can't play outdoors until halfway through the college season, so obviously fan interest isn't going to be high in the majority of the country and is also why the best players from around the country leave to play in the southeast and west coast

id consider baseball less of a "mediocre product" and more of a niche sport. Our SEC fan bases love it, much like the northern schools love their college hockey. It will always thrive down here, but not in certain parts of the country.

womens basketball has potential to be the more entertaining and biggest money maker for womens sport. All cultures play it, weather doesnt affect it, etc. Putting resources to grow the sport make sense. Id expect some of the college push to trickle into the WNBA and see some strides made there.

People on this board may not be a fan, and I respect that but a lot of folks are and a lot of ladies have waited for stars to look up to and aspire to be.

Here's my unpopular take:

Girls who want to play sports having access to watch said sport played on a "high" (relatively) level is a good thing. I want that subset of girls to have that chance.

But, most girls aren't innately interested in basketball, much less pursuit of high level WBB. Further, many who have some interest probably don't relate to women's basketball. There is a reason Alex Morgan was every American daughter's favorite, and it's not because she's the best. It's because she's pretty and relatable to them AND plays a sport they like.

Promoting "make herstory" type sports to the vast majority of women is a waste. They didn't ask for it and they aren't naturally drawn to it. For men, sure, it's good to make sure we have a chance to watch women who work hard to excel in their sport compete, but it's ultimately a bad product. I don't say that to be mean, college baseball is a bad product compared to the MLB. MLS has been around for a couple decades and is only recently beginning to show signs of real life as far as relative quality.

So my question is, if it's a good thing that it's pushed/forced on us - why? Because it serves as an inspiration for 10% of girls? Ok, arguably so. Because it's quality entertainment for sports audiences in America? I don't think so. Because it needs exposure - again, why?

I think the best argument for exposure/forced exposure is to raise the quality of the product. See MLS. Arguably more exposure has helped to expand the appeal of going "pro" domestically, and attracts more talent from here and elsewhere, upping the product. But I think then you get into the question of whether regardless of advances in the women's game, there is still going to be a pretty low ceiling for quality (from a wholesale spectator viewpoint).

oh it definitely did. Night of the bracket being released that’s all they talked about. Couldn’t find any coverage of the mens tournament

People acting like media coverage is holding college baseball back is quite hilarious. It's a mediocre product unfortunately. And that's coming from someone with a pretty successful college baseball program.

I went to my first LSU baseball game over the weekend. It is somewhat of a down year for LSU baseball, but I bet the crowd there was larger than it has been for any LSU women's basketball game, ever. Just saying.

The Women's National Championship between South Carolina and UConn was the most-watched women's title game in nearly two decades, per
@ESPNPR

-4.85 million viewers
-Up 18% from 2021, 30% from 2019
-Peaked at 5.91 million viewers

For comparison to last year's College Baseball National Championship:

Wednesday’s deciding Game 3 of the College World Series final (Mississippi State-Vanderbilt) averaged a tournament-high 1.67 million viewers on ESPN2

4.85 million isn't a lot. The men had 18.1.
College baseball isn't popular either unless you are really good then, maybe, but honestly nobody outside of South Carolina and Conn. watched the game with those single digit numbers.

Thursday night football draws an average of 13 million viewers during the REGULAR season.

I could’ve sworn ESPN had said 75th. Looks like it’s the 50th from a quick google search

I would agree with this...for white girls.

Someone like say Aja Wilson may be that for Black girls. again not really trying to make it a race thing, but rather a relatable thing.

ESPN doesn’t even have a college baseball tab to click on. I think that’s bs it just falls under college sports. The little league World Series has a tab for God’s sake.

I’m pretty sure that little league baseball is way more popular than college baseball

They are being pressured to redirect resources from the mens game to the womens game. I look for them to hold tournament games in the same arena on the same night and divide the profits.

During the height of march madness if you googled "NCAA Tournament" it took you to the womens bracket

Hulu Live was constantly recommending every live women's tourney game before any live men's games, in my scroll bar.

They got my arse a few times because I just saw college logos and clicked on the women's games.
