Eligibility until they join a conference.

It’s just that simple. They declined a bowl bid so the NCAA needs to respond in this manner.

“I hate that college football is loosing all of its traditions!!”.

“Notre Dame, a traditional independent team, should be forced to join a conference.”.

I love you, cognitive dissonance.

Agreed. The G5 short bus route needs to be nixed, too.

What happens if every team simply decides to not schedule Notre Dame moving forward?

I disagree. If they had played their schedule and won their games, they should have made it in.

They hurt themselves by not being in a conference this year to get AQ status. But really, all that stuff is lame.

But if they can get a quality schedule, and actually win the games, then I have no issue with it.

Especially when you have teams like Tulane and JMU making it just because of "conference". It's really dumb.

We play them in like 5 years I think.

Lots of time for that game to get canceled, especially if the current trends continue.

At the end of this season not being in a conference only hurt them

Not playing in a bowl game is only going to hurt them also

Although Iowa St. and Kansas St. are both skipping bowls because they lost their coaches and they both owe the B12 500k.

The FBS schedule needs fixing much more than the playoffs. No coaching changes or signees or free agents until the season concludes

Opting out of the bowl game because they didn't get what they want is beta.

LSU played a bowl with 39 scholly players and a WR playing QB.

Memories are a wonderful human phenomenon. Sitting in Hard Rock seeing Bama curb stomp ND will always be one of my best memories.

They are an awesome fan base stuck back in the 70’s thinking Ara is on the field.

They need to join a conference and realize outside their little world no one takes them serious.

The issue is, it never should have hurt them enough to have two teams in that are a combined nearly 40 point under-dogs.

Is it though? In the transfer portal era, how much of their roster is even going to be there next year? How many opt-outs were they going to have? Realistically, playing a meaningless bowl might do more harm for the program than good. FSU, for example, would have been better off opting out in 23 with the damage that game did to their recruiting.

Upvoted OP.

They've played the blueblood Catholic Knute Rockne and win one for the Gipper card long enough.

Oh to be independent and be able to pick and choose. Fk’m. A slap to their seniors. Picking up the football and going home after losing the only two real games they had and then playing a long line of cupcakes. This is a wake up call to the Irish. Join a conference. Quit the weak scheduling, thinking you deserve an auto invite because of some self deserving placement based on a time long ago that no longer exists.

They are acting like the neighborhood kid that wasn’t invited to the party.

The kid that picked up their ball and went home.

This will lead to a 16 team playoff

That “traditions” horse is out of the barn. Why should Notre Dame be exempted from adapting to the new landscape.

You know what another Notre Dame tradition was? Not accepting a bowl invitation from 1925 to 1968.

Being independent has consequences, Notre Dame can’t enjoy its perks an then complain about the drawbacks.

ND plays 5 teams from the ACC each year on a rotational basis & four traditional games against Purdue, USC, Navy, & Stanford. In actuality, they only have three discretionary games each season. Future games with Stanford & USC are still in negotiation. Future schedules include Wis, MSU (26), Aub (27), TX, Ark, Aub (28), TX & Bama (29), Bama & Ind (30). ND is a national brand, not a regional brand like teams in the SEC. ND players are recruited throughout the USA, hence the need to have flexibility to play nationwide. With the exception of LSU, very few of the SEC teams ever leave the friendly confines of the South to play competitive teams in the West or Midwest. Why? It's not the fear of competition or cost, but the notion that there is very little gained in terms of exposure to highly prized recruits. For better or worse, we must acknowledge ND for what she is and base CFP playoff positioning on her football performance, not conference membership.
