With the big 5 throwing their weight around and threatening to change the structure of the ncaa, have they provoked the NCAA into a fight?
IS the NCAA now head hunting? Just a thought...

You know it. The NCAA figures to keep them in line, the best course of action is to piss off as many people as possible.

That's the worst thing they could possibly do, unless they think the "big 5" are bluffing. The quickest way to spark a revolution is to start punishing the people clamoring for that revolution. Especially if that revolution effectively renders your punishment impotent.

The NCAA is like the government without weapons. An incompetent, illogical, monopoly that is full of unqualified busy-bodies that waste everyones time passing unneeded resolutions solely to justify their existence.

The NCAA did not start out as a power broker and did not gain real power until the 1950's and the TV football monopoly. Since that was broken in the late 70's it is just a paper tiger. The war is not between the NCAA and the Big 5, the war is between the Big 3 and everybody else.

I side with the NCAA against the Big 5. The Big 5 brought us crap like the BCS and would only be in it for the money, and would ruin the sport.

What do you think the NCAA is in it for? Goodwill and charity?

To be honest, I agree somewhat.
1- I do think it would be a good idea to create a new division.
2- I do believe the NCAA needs balls and a spine. They need to clean up sports.

If you read the old papers in Vandy's archives (Vandy was involved in creating the "pre" NCAA) you see their power was more direct in college vs the outside world than really regulating colleges. When the NCAA was most powerful was the 1950's in separating the mob from college sports.

this is the view of an anarchist. really. so, the government and the ncaa should be abolished? exactly what do you propose to replace them with? by the way, you could get involved with the government and maybe affect some changes the right way. just to sit on the side line and bitch is becoming an american trait. very dangerous. i'm certainly not saying either are perfect, but they are what we have.

This is correct. The NCAA has shown a reluctance to punish offenders in recent years. Cam Newton and Oregon are good examples. The NCAA knows that if it wants to remain the governing body of all collegiate athletics, it has to turn it's head to anything but the worst offenses. Otherwise the 5 major conferences are going to leave the fold and create a governing body that is more in line with their goals.

And if we do not act now, it will fail.
Simply rules, and strong enforcement would keep the cheating down. There is most certainly away to make it competitive and clean.
In fact I believe the normal people here on the rant has more common sense and could create a better NCAA. I know I could.

We really have not seen the NCAA severely punish a program in a very long time. The NCAA has no teeth anymore and is just giving everyone who violates a "gummer" these days. I believe the revolution will happen in the next 10 years and the Big 5 will break away.

The Penn State punishment opened eyes on the NCAA. NCAA took a report and ran with it. The bowl games are a joke. For people not involved in the NCAA and making 6-7 digit paydays because they "own" a bowl (that's why there is not a true playoff). It's ludicrous. I say the SEC take the bull by balls and end this BS.
