I think all of us agree that officiating is at an all time low and needs to change now., we need instant reform before next football season.
This is not about your or my team but how we can impact immediate change and what must be done.
I believe Sankey will never change unless the correct pressure is applied.
What can we do?

We need a petition or go fund me billboard in Birmingham to raise national awareness to pressure Sankey to make the change to full time officias

1. Fire all the current refs (they can re-apply but previous performance will be considered if rehired)
2. Go to national officiating with uniform national rules
3. No refs are tied to particular conference
4. Full time refs, but are graded
5. Only the highest graded get SEC and Big10 games
6. FULL transparency with unedited audio on video replays

Does any sport actually have full time referees? I genuinely don’t know. I thought they all had other jobs.

Nfl officials make:
• Entry Level (Years 1–3): $100,000 to $150,000
• Mid-Career (Years 3–5): $150,000 to $200,000
• Experienced (Years 5–8): $200,000 to $250,000
• Crew Chiefs / Top Veteran Referees: $250,000 to $350,000

SEC officials make $9600 to 36000 a year.

SEC could Easily afford 75 to 150 K per year .

Too many games already this season have had questionable outcomes by poor officiating

There must be higher salaries with stiffer penalties and accountability

that's pretty much 90% of it really. You can't take a dude that sells insurance Monday-Friday and plop him into a 100K seat pressure cooker on saturday. With the billions of dollars involved in the sport these days it's comical they still just pull random workers from offices to lead these games.

The other 10% of it is accountability. With very, very few exceptions there's no punishment or repercussions for being absolutely and indescribably awful at the job.

makes too much sense and might cost .002% of total revenue, so it wont get done. But email this shite to speaker Johnson for inclusion in the upcoming law

There is nothing we can do. You just have to hope they don’t hurt your team at a critical time.

Its a flawed game and always has been. Its impossible to ref fairly and you will never please all fans no matter what.

By rules they could call a penalty in practically every single play. And since they can’t do that it becomes judgement calls. And thats where the fans argue.

In a fans judgement they shouldn’t have called it. Or in a fans judgment they should have called it.

Seems to me they like it being subjective which allows the front office to still sway games and there really is no recourse. NFL is the same way.

It can never be fixed its built in chaos by how many rules they have. It can be improved but that would require league to spend a lot of money. And even then it will still be subjective. Why would they spend lots of money when ratings are breaking records and fans attend games in big stadiums and most are sold out.

Sankey and his crew will continue to collect their big paychecks while fans argue about refs on message boards. Nothing will change

no real answer
just watch on Sunday - the NFL officials are just as bad
it's easy to catch everything with technology but these refs are trying their best to do it in real time

I dont know that its at an all time low. I think its just you have so many more cameras and replays than ever before, but you're still asking humans to see everything all at once. It's going to lead to error, especially when the game is as fast as ever.

Adding more officials is an option, or even a penalty challenge flag

also just to be clear, you want to fire every ref....and next season youll have all brand new green refs? That would be a disaster

The sports where games are played all week (NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS) all have full time referees.

The NFL does not; however, they DO make 6 figures and are usually in other, high-performing / high-intellect jobs (attorneys, educators, engineers, financial advisors, etc.)

SEC refs make between $3,000 and $5,000 per game, so even if you worked a game every weekend you would need to be at the top to clear 6 figures. It also seems that some conferences reimburse for travel and some do not, so that would make a pretty significant impact on what you take home.

I think it's less about being full-time and more about compensation, especially if the SEC also does not reimburse for travel. Can you imagine being willing to get screamed at and hated for that kind of money, especially starting off and being on the lower end of the compensation?

I could be the greatest, most accurate ref in history and some one will still blame me for their team losing and probably throw shite at me as I leave a stadium. No thanks.

Refs already know how to follow the script - what more could Sankey want?

Full-time refs, microchipped balls, and additional cameras could all help.

According to chatgpt, the cost for full time refs is about $15 mil/yr - with that kind of investment, whats the ROI? Controversy hasn't driven way customers yet.

There’s no way in hell id ever want to be a ref.

I just don’t pay enough attention to the minutia.

It will never get better. Should have seen the kicker get his helmet ripped off in BYU game. The side judge (woman) blew the call then they doubled down and ran time of the clock for his helmet coming off. The calls keep getting worse...and that includes the NFL

"better refs" isn't going to fix a broken game.

if you want to "fix" it you have to remove all subjective calls. holding, PI, targeting, roughing the passer are all "when i feel like it" judgement calls and will always be arbitrary.

this. and you also can't realistically expect said cubicle worker to never, ever, not ever, in any shape, form or fashion ever have any bias that affects the outcome, and never take any money ever from anyone or any group involved in the NCAACFB's multi-billion dollar betting market. you mean to tell me they found a group of the most dignified, upstanding 9 to 5'ers that they would never ever take a couple bands under the table to throw some ticky tack holding or pi call to negate two completed hail mary's so as to keep a storyline going, or betting odds upheld, or a myriad of the other interested parties in the outcome of the game satisfied with the result? give me a fricking break. ain't no way.

there should probably be some ability to financially audit them at any time if something seems fricky. the #1 antidote is a full time career doing it, followed up by complete and total accountability.

Take some of the money that is outrageous for parking, tickets, food, drinks, alcohol, surcharges, swag and TAF fees and dedicate that to paying full time officials. There is no way that a conference that consider's itself the gold standard for athletics should have this bad of an officiating problem. Its bad bad for a really long time and it is just getting worse.
