re: Nate Oats: If certain guys can't give us effort, then there may not be a spot for them

Nate Oatmeal is not a good basketball coach. And he is an abysmal recruiter.
Really curious to see when A1abana pulls the plug on this little experiment. Maybe they make another run at Thad Matta (even though he turned them down last time)

Best coach during the White Slow BB era, same with Rupp.

quote:"One of Auerbach’s most notable attributes was that he was colorblind. He didn't see black or white players on the court; he just saw players who could help him win. In 1950, he became the first to draft an African-American: Chuck Cooper, a second-team All-American from Duquesne, in the second round.
Best coach during the White Slow BB era, same with Rupp.
He was also the first to start five blacks and first to hire a black coach (Bill Russell, 1966) in the NBA. He also hired two other African-American coaches after Russell stepped down -- Satch Sanders and K.C. Jones, both former Celtics."
SkyKing, you can't seem to get out of your own way!
Just quit digging.

Just another excuse. The league wasnt very deep and if you have three of the top 12 scorers in the league, you should win more than he did. The league is not going to stand still while Oats improves his depth.
Saying Alabama should have won more because they had 3 of the top 12 scorers is like saying Mike Leach should have won a national title by now because his team's have been near the top in offense most years. Oats' system is going to almost always have several top scorers because it intentionally prioritizes offense at the expense of defense. It's going to take a few recruiting classes to get the style of player and the training needed to be an elite offensive team while also playing average defense.

But the entire league was made of mostly slow white players. Great set shots and playing big men under the basket without the worry of a lane violation. I know you want to romanticize that era, but it has very few similarities to todays game.

We are only talking about making the post season, not a NC.

You are ridiculously ill informed about SEC basketball. You really expected that Oats should have turned a program that rarely makes the tournament into a tournament team in year one while instituting a radically different playing style with players he didn't recruit?

I felt he had the talent in a down year to make the post season. I believe Avery would have come closer, he was close almost every year. Everyone wants to blame the D, take a look at the scores in most of his SEC loses.

We had a shot until Herb broke his wrist and Petty injured his elbow.
We had zero talented big men last season. This season we have Bruner and Tchikou, in addition to Quinerly, Shack, Herb, Primo, Ellis, Gary, Petty at guard and wing.
We’re 10 times more talented than we were last season

The excuses are similar to what we hear when things don't work out for football also.

Losing your 2nd and 3rd best players is not an excuse.

Proof that Bama needed to pay up and go after the best coach available. Nothing against Oats, but he is in over his head at Bama

Yeah, screw the tourney. Just as long as you beat Auburn in that dump.

I don’t think that’s my decision to make

Bingo.
Two words: Recruit. Better.

Herb was playing with a cast, Petty was injured, and we were starting Galin fricking Smith.
It’s not surprising that we lost.
