Im somewhat surprised Bama folks didnt name Mike Shula, but whatever.

Whitworth was 4-24-2 in 3 seasons.
Shula was 26-23 in 4 seasons.

Both sucked, but as you see one sucked way more than the other.

Mike Archer was worse. They were both equally useless on game day, but at least Hallman knew the importance of recruiting and the type of athletes to recruit, so that when he got fired there was a wealth of talent left for DiNardo. Archer left us with complete shite.

Archer was left a top 10 program by Bill Arnsparger. He won with that talent for two years, then ran the program into the ground. Hallman took over after Archer's mess and had to build from the ground up. That is the only reason for the difference in their records. Give them both the same starting circumstances, and their records would be similar for a while, then Archer's would drop off badly due to lack of recruiting, while Hallman's would stabilize at a better level than Archer's.

Hallman was just an absolute joke. As a previous poster said he was a sorry individual, too. It was almost embarrassing at times to say you were an LSU supporter with that moron as HC.

You know, I almost hate to use the word 'pathetic', because I think he was a pretty good OC, and a good person - but just wasn't ready to be a head coach at the time (plus Hatfield didn't really leave him much), but some of the worst performing teams came under Jack Crowe's watch.

Mike Archer isn't THAT for behind. He sunk the program to set the stage for Hallman's misery.

Hallman is the only answer for LSU fans. He was a terrible coach and a weasel of a person.

I always think about what would of happend had he not left to become Florida's AD. He was a great coach.

Oh, I agree. But comparing talent level when he left to the talent level when Archer left is a complete joke, too. Hallman was head and shoulders better than Archer at recruiting, and that alone made him a better coach.

I wouldn't know. I only met him once or twice and then only briefly and in a crowd, so I can't say that I know him at all, really.

What I do know is how they reacted publicly after being fired. Hallman was classy, thanked LSU for the opportunity and went on his way. Archer, upon finding out that Joe Dean had contacted a search firm JUST IN CASE he had to fire Archer, called a press conference, announced his resignation and said "this university is a joke".

Sorry individual factor is a wash with these two.

No doubt he was a moron, but remember who we're comparing him to. Against Ohio State with the score tied in the final minute while we were inside the 10, Archer threw to the end zone instead of taking the chip shot FG, resulting in an interception that cost us the win. When asked why, he said "I will never go for the tie". WTF?

Moron factor is a wash, also.

we'll just have to disagree on this. Regardless of who's talent was on a team, Archer did win an SEC title. Hallman produced LSU's worst overall season in school history.

I'd vote Curley worse 50 out of 50 times.

Fair enough. It is, after all, like debating "which is worse, herpes or syphilis?"
