Seems like a decent hire by UT. It's not a sexy, headline inspiring hire. But He might just get inspired in order to piss of Texas, and win a bit more.

Barnes always seemed unremarkable to me, but his resume is much better than my perception. If he can replicate at UT what he did at UT, it will be a great hire.

or not because right now it is the extreme outlier.
Yeah, it's so easy to win when the team you take over gets hit with NCAA sanctions.

Seems like ESPN thinks his first season was much more successful than you claimed. Oh yeah, they also think they would have made the tourney. I mean, they did knock off Syracuse... who made the Final 4...

I think it had more to do with the UT ego. Out of the 16 tourney appearances he made, only 5 times did he win a tourney game. Doesn't sit well with the shorthorns

Let's see, the following teams now have better coaches and upside than A&M.

Alabama - About to hire Greg Marshall (UPGRADE)

Arkansas - Mike Anderson

Auburn - Hired Bruce Pearl (UPGRADE)

Florida - Billy Donovan

Georgia - Mark Fox (Unbeaten vs. Kennedy and in the tournament)

Kentucky - John Calipari

LSU - Jones has more talent and beat Arkansas in Walton. 0 for his last 3 vs. Kennedy is irrelevant here.

Mississippi State - Ben Howland (UPGRADE)

Ole Miss - Andy Kennedy has been in the dance 2 of the last 3 seasons

Tennessee - Rick Barnes (UPGRADE)

Missouri, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt may have better coaches, but have far less talent.

Would be a good hire, IMO. But...

He's arguably the hottest name in college basketball aside from The Scuzbucket at UK. Why in the hell would he go to Bama? I just don't see it. He's under zero pressure at WS. They don't even play football, he may as well be a God there. It just doesn't make sense to go to Bama regardless of the money. He will make a ton of money at any P5 school, bama isn't any different financially

Ego?

We gave him 17 years. In those 17 years, in the NCAA tournament, he beat a team with a better seed once.

Barnes is a very good person, and I hope he wins a title at Tennessee, but Texas was more than fair with him.
