No, we are 17-12-1 on the field. They actually dominated us in the great 80’s 7-3 compliments of Reggie Collier and Brett Favre. They beat Ole Miss 4 out of 5 from 1979-84, so they quit playing them and haven’t since. Chicken shites.

Southern Miss was, if you will pardon the expression, flying high during that time period. State wasn't the only team they knocked off during that run.

They've been stuck in a long term rebuild ever since they completely fell off a cliff a few years back... something I can relate too.

I should add, when MSU restarted the series with them Southern Miss was one the best G5 teams out there. It was a gutsy move to put them back on the schedule when State did.

Yeah, I was in middle/high school in the 80’s and remember it well. USM beat the Bear in his last game ever in Tuscaloosa at then Denny Stadium. It was either the Bear’s only loss in Tuscaloosa or his second. USM also took down Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Florida State, Illinois, Nebraska, NC State, Virginia, etc during their “glory years”

The NCAA with their farce making us forfeit those games from 1975-1977 makes the series look closer.

USM was very strong from about 1975-2011. The wheels fell off in 2012 with the 0-12 season combined with the gap between P5 and G5 schools that exist now. You still get an occasional upset (Ga. State over UT) but they are fewer in the present day.
USM made a living off recruiting players just under the SEC level from So. Ga., So, AL., NW FL, So. Ms. and So. LA. The problem for them today is Programs like Troy, South Alabama, Georgia Southern, ULL etc. are taking players that they used to get.

Back in the late 70’s into the early 90’s, they had some great players i. e. Reggie Collier, Sammy Winder, Alfred Williams, Hanford Dixon, Brett Favre and others. They were really good. Ironically, State beat Favre and the Eagles in 1989 and 90 when Southern was actually the better team.

Unfortunately for USM I do not ever see them returning to those days. The deck is stacked against them. They will be competitively good in the CUSA but will struggle against P5 teams though an occasional upset is certainly possible.

Back to yesterday, it was a good win for State and USM has a decent team this year and I think they can make a run in the CUSA. I will be pulling for them.

Southern Miss was something of a giant killer esp. when Favre was there IIRC. So, not surprising they would have run over a few Miss St teams. They were not the only "bigger" team they beat though.

Forcing out Jeff Bower proved to be the mistake most thought it would be, USM thought they were too big time for him.

The Golden Eagles had a winning record in Bowers' final 14 seasons and played in a bowl game in 10 of his last 11 seasons.

State quit playing usm also because they dominated State. Good to get the facts straight.

Actually no, Oxford Jr. College stop playing Mississippi Southern after 1984.

State College stopped playing them after 1990.

State College has resumed playing Southern Miss in 2014-2015-2019-2023-2024.
I like them being sporadically scheduled. Good instate game, will create interest with the fan bases and is something to look forward to.
As was mentioned State actually scheduled the 2014-15 games back in 2009 when USM was flying high. At that time no one could predicted that they would have fallen so far so fast after 2011.

Meanwhile Ole Miss has not played USM in 35 years and counting. Nothing wrong with that but let’s get our facts correct.

State quit playing them because USM wanted home and home after they quit playing in Jackson, but State wanted 3 out of 4 at home. State had just beaten them two years straight when they quit. It is good to get the facts straight.

Southern Miss has been a very strong mid-major at different points in their history. I think they picked up wins against UGA, Auburn, Alabama, and LSU in the 1990s.

So you're 14-14-1 when you take State's cheating into account?
