That FSU/Nebraska game is the first football game I consciously remember. I was five.

Two Heisman winners vs. the most unstoppable QB in the country. That Texas comeback is the stuff of legends. I remember the footballgasm I had when Vince Young ran the ball into the endzone for the final score. It was the greatest game I had ever seen. Absolutely amazing.

I just can't fathom how a game from 1993 had more viewers than a recent 'hyped up' matchup (e.g. Game of the Century, 2013 Alabama/Notre Dame, etc)

Eta: The amount of tv's we're surrounded by today dwarfs the amount they had in 1993

I kind of figured the semifinal games to be at the top, well atleast Ohio State vs Bama.

Doesn't get much better than that game for pure sports entertainment.

Most watched by number of viewers, but I'd bet the Texas/Arkansas game in 1969 had an Nielsen number that would put it on the list.
By all accounts, 58M households had a TV and 1 in 4 watched the game.

Definitely in my top 3. But I remember watching Oklahoma - Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl and literally being speechless. That is my #1.

Fewer games on TV. The game of the week was really the game of the week back then.

Here are the games with the largest television audiences, according to Nielsen, since 1991. However, that list only covers the Fiesta, Orange, Rose and Sugar bowl games, plus separate national championship games added to the schedule in 2007 and this year's playoff. Data for other games was not available from Nielsen.

I knew this list was off. The 1987 Fiesta Bowl (Miami vs. Penn State) and the 1973 Sugar Bowl (Alabama vs. Notre Dame) had significantly higher ratings than the Texas/USC game from 2006.
