Curious as to what makes it an "asterisk championship"

It's an "asterisk" championship because most of the statements about that season don't carry the weight they typically would in a normal season. You have to put an asterisk next to things like:

"Played 11 SEC games***"

*against many teams that didn't do spring practice
*with tons of opt outs
*with a girl kicking at Vandy

Additionally...OSU played like 7 games that year right?? There's a line between staying rested & flat out not getting enough reps to improve over the course of the season. Bama had the advantage of a stable, long-tenured coach who already had everything in place & running at peak efficiency.

Imo it's still legit, just helps to keep this perspective in mind when people on here tout it as some GOAT team. Kudos to Bama for handling adversity better than anyone in a wild year, that trophy belongs to them & nobody can take that away

That removes any asterisk you and your chatgpt/Grok facts may choose to attempt to place on them.
Playing at ole miss, tenn, lsu and Florida in front of zero crowd still leaves an asterisk. The FL and OM games were shootouts, maybe that swings the other way with crowd noise giving the home team momentum.
I don’t understand how anyone can look at the Covid season and think it was the same as a regular season.

It's exactly why the asterisk exists you dummy

11-0 in the 2020 SEC doesn’t mean the same thing as 11-0 in any other year's SEC hence the asterisk*

For a similar example, look at Byron Nelson winning 18 golf tournaments in 1945. There's a really good reason that never happened against full strength fields

Post-Saban Alabama will be the biggest disappointment of the 2020’s when it’s all said and done, and there really won’t be a close second

Relative to what? The peak Saban dynasty? Ok.

2020: 13-0, SEC champs, CFP, NC
2021: 13-2, SEC champs, CFP, NC runner up
2022: 11-2, top 5 finish
2023: 12-2, SEC champs, CFP, lost to NC winner
2024: 9-4, missed CFP by one spot
2025: 10-4, SEC runner up, CFP, CFP win

So...
1 NC
3 SEC championships
4 CFP appearances
Averaged 11 wins per season

Please by all means, feel free to compare your resumes. If the logo by your name doesn't say UGA I bet that you wont.

Bama could miss the playoffs the rest of the decade and have a better resume of accomplishments for this period than almost anyone in the conference.

Oregon played in the PAC 12 Championship game and Fiesta Bowl with a record of 3-2, with their two losses coming to Oregon State and Cal. If that doesn't highlight the absurdity of that entire season I don't know what does. Alabama was the rightful champion but to act like that season was anything short of a Twilight Zone episode is ridiculous.

It has to be between Auburn, LSU, and Florida.

If the name of the State in which you're located isn't in your university name, you're probably not underachieving.

I think we are the runaway winner in this category. We have sucked for a long time and have lost to the likes of New Mexico State and Cal at JHS during this run-that-gives-me-the-runs

I guess it depends on your definition of "underachieving", but OP listed preseason/postseason rankings so presumably that's the metric.

If so, I agree with the arky fan above.

Louisiana exhibiting a penchant for cancel culture once again.

Sad.

If defeating a 6 win team for the national championship isn’t an asterisk I don’t really know what you would say is

You never hear these losers put an asterisk on MLB, NFL, or NBA championships in the same period.

Literally just mad as hell bama smoked the whole field.

Do you not post on the MSB? People have always done that with the Dodgers and Lakers 2020 titles.
I'm a FL Panthers fan and I do it all the time to Lightning fans about their 50 game "titles" in 2020 and 2021.

How so? Dan Mullen helped set the foundation for Florida's descent into underachieving and failure.
