This is one sport the SEC will never be competitive in B1G wrestling is on a different level entirely

Anyone who trash talks wrestling clearly has never wrestled and probably wouldn’t last 4 hours in wrestling practice.
Ncaa limits your training hours to 20 a week in season

Wrestling is the hardest sport I’ve ever competed in, hands down.
Google spits out a lot of hits for wrestlers who died leisurely enjoying my sport

How many former Mizzou wrestlers became Pro Wrasslers?
Zero? But we have had several join major MMA promotions. We recently had three holding titles all at once.

Honest question to the OP (and other fellow Mizzou fans)...do you think anyone else cares?
Would you care if Mississippi State was #2 in country in pole vaulting? Or if A&M was #1 in the country in some equestrian event? Mizzou's wrestling carries that same level of interest in the SEC to non-Mizzou fans.

I care, and I appreciate the post. Mizzou is one of my more liked SEC teams, mostly because of the former Appalachian State head coach, and wrestling is the only sport better than football. If you don’t care then don’t keep bumping this post to the top with comments

Are you even from Missouri? Wrestling is a clear #2 or #3 sport depending on the town.
Also, you can scroll your television year round and probably find a Mizzou wrestler turned pro fighter within a few hours. That does’t happen with any other sport.

Crazy how wrestling has improved so much in Misery. I wrestled HS & College back in the 80’s and early 90’s. Honestly would not pay attention to an opponent if they were not from Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and maybe Minnesota, Wisconsin & NY. The rest, including Misery, were lacking technically and endurance wise.

No. I wrestled nationally. I can tell you right now us Louisiana kids got our shite pushed in any time we went up against kids from the Midwest. Our state champion got embarrassed by a guy from Texas.
Now admittedly that was 20 years ago, so maybe we have come a long way.

I wish the SEC had wrestling. There’s some really good high school wrestling in Louisiana (nothing compared to you guys in the Midwest) but it could be even bigger if there was more college exposure.
Plus it really helps the guys that play in the trenches. Wrestling is usually very technical at the highest levels. Matches in college are usually won by a couple points. It is all about hand fighting, leverage and foot speed. Things that OL and DL need in spades. I remember talking to legendary a-hole…I mean coach Bobby Hall and he told me it would not help in HS.

State is or was #1 in javelin. Recently we had the top 2, maybe top 3 javelin throwers in the NCAA.
Penn State has such an advantage in wrestling. They poached Carl Sanderson and now have won 10 of the last 12 championships (most by a large point margin), and have the U.S. Olympic Center for wrestling on campus.

That’s cool. How many State javelin throwers are going to be fighting Connor McGregor in the next couple months?

I was replying to MIZ who mentioned if State was #1 in pole vaulting.
I'm just a little bit of a wrestling fan. I went to Penn State for grad school. I follow them occasionally and will sometimes watch the finals.
Being #2 in wrestling is cool. I like when Mississippi State is good in other sports, especially baseball. I have season tickets to baseball.

It’s interesting wrestling hasn’t taken off as much in the south. Especially with how popular UFC has become. Blame Title 9 I suppose.

Short answer is it takes too long. You need a lot of experienced volunteers and community support to build a successful program. I have a close relative with a bad back who can barely bend over but still gives his energy to local wrestling clubs like he has for 40 years. His kid was a national champ as well, but not D1.

Watched them sprint one day on Lady Bird Lake. Those dudes could easily pull a skier upright.
