Many fans thought being in the SEC they would mean they could just go into FL and GA and get guys now. They even put up billboards in those states because it would help they said.
Hmm
Hmm

In the SEC talent is absolutely an issue. Alabama, Florida, and LSU have won 7 of the last 10 national championships because they regularly sit at the top of the national recruiting rankings.
They regularly sit atop the recruiting rankings because services rank their recruits higher.
There's a small amount of truth in that but only a small amount.
Yes, when a big name school is known to be after a recruit it tends to result in a bump in that recruit's rankings. But even considering this bias when you go back and look at how many of the 1st round draft picks were 4 and 5 stars coming out of high school it is very clear that the high school recruiting rankings (though biased) are a better way to evaluate recruiting classes than anything else in real time.

IMO here's a few things that need to happen:
1. Lock down the state. There is enough top level talent each year to form a competitive base for the team.
2. Go into ILL heavier than any other border state. You won't be fighting off Illinois for guys, be prepared to go against ND and the B1G big boys. Illinois sucks, they didn't get any of the four 4 star OTs from instate this year.
3. Kansas/Iowa JCs. Proximity for scouting purposes is an absolute advantage that needs to be exploited. Don't go KState crazy, but supplement regularly to keep depth strong.
4. Dip into TX, LA, MS, TN, GA, FL, AR enough to build consistent relationships, but don't try to build foundations there. It's a losing proposition. Resources are better spent elsewhere unless you can get a coach with certain ties to those state. Henson was good at LSU, but only netted 1 marginal player for Mizzou (from LA).

They need to lock down Missouri, steal from Illinois, and pick what they can from Tejas and the deep southeast (which won't be easy).
What hurts Missouri is location from Tejas and Georgia. They need a younger more energetic coaching staff that can go into these areas, listed above, and pull recruits to Missouri.
This is the strategy. Takes time to build contacts and relationships with the coaches in the new areas.

They need to be Ohio's gateway to the SEC.

I think they bombed the class on purpose, with the hopes of being invited to the B1G by proving they have similar recruiting classes as well.

They won't out recruit Kentucky in Ohio while Stoops is there.

I think we need to hit the Chicago area hard.

I don't know what all the suburbs are, but Illinois looks pretty loaded, or at least top heavy, for '14.

So you think Bama, UF, LSU, etc. don't know how to find and evaluate talent? What do you think they do, just open up their rivals subscription and offer the top kids on the list? You can't really be that naive.

You surely are a dumbass. I was lampooning your stupid comment

Exactly. And the recruiting services know this. These coaches are recruiting kids for 3+ years. The recruiting services evaluate the kids for 1 year, maybe 2 for elite prospects. These services are going to defer to the best coaching staffs in the country and follow along.

I don't know what the eff Pinkel's recruiting strategy anymore is. That being said, this class was his last one, so we'll have to wait and see what the next coach's philosophy is this time next year

I think missouri is going to struggle recruting against us for the midwestern kids. I just can't think of an advantage missouri would recruiting wise unless the kid was in state. Not trying to flame if missouri has some advantages in recruiting i'm open to being corrected.

Any evidence of this? I think those kids really earn their stars for the most part. Sure the services miss from time to time but it is far from a concrete business
