Taxpayers in Mississippi should be livid. Pitchforks and torches in the streets livid.

Mississippi is eliminating the state income tax already. This just evens the playing field with other states without an income tax.

Taxation is theft.

frick, what reason would that income not be taxable while the middle class drowns...

The reason these bills have so much support from politicians is push from the rich boosters that pull their strings.
Without the state income tax, booster NIL payments go that much farther in competing to recruit players.

Pipe down, Francis. I don't like it either, but your state will be doing it soon enough.

Shame on Mississippi. We either all pay tax or none of us do.

You don't think LA is doing something similar? Pretty sure it is a request directly from Lane before he fled the coop. Delusional.

Isn't Mississippi phasing out income tax? I thought it was supposed to be gone by 2030 if certain conditions were met.

That's correct. Starting in 2027, the rate drops by 0.25 percentage points annually:
2027: 3.75%
2028: 3.5%
2029: 3.25%
2030: 3% (and remains at 3% unless further reductions trigger).
Then it's a 0.2% to 0.3% reduction each year until it's completely gone. By 2040 it'll be completely gone (some projections indicate by 2037 - depends on the growth triggers hit).

Wild seeing folks on here upset and wanting to see higher taxes on folks.

Hasnt Landry already made everyone aware that a chunk of tax or public use funds are going toward LSU contract exits and help servicing new contracts?

Mississippi isn’t exactly known for leading in economic metrics, so using tax incentives on NIL income feels like a predictable move to stay competitive.

FYI: Legislation has already been passed to phase out our state income tax for everyone.
