Mike Leach’s Mississippi State Bulldogs beat Vanderbilt 24-17 on Saturday to improve to 2-4 and snap a four-game losing streak, but the coach is not completely happy.

Leach’s tenure at his new school started off well with a win at LSU. As the season has moved on, LSU has been proven to be below average, while MSU has completely sputtered. Vandy, meanwhile, is 0-5 and this is the first time since their opener that the Bulldogs haven’t been blown out.

Leach ripped his players after the win for playing “timid,” among other things.

“They pressured us some and basically watched us take turns screwing up, playing timid and sitting on the sideline with blank, wide-eyed faces. And I’m getting sick and tired of that,” Leach said.

This has been part of the theme for Leach lately. He began doing a “purge” within the program as he shuffles players off the roster and puts in guys who buy in. He’s also trying to bring in the Air Raid offense, which is a transition that takes a while.

This first year for Leach is going to be a long and rough one. The Bulldogs have four games left on their schedule, and it’s plausible they lose all four (vs. Auburn, at Georgia, at Ole Miss, vs. Missouri). Mississippi State’s 24 points were their most since their opener, which is a positive.

Sounds like they'll be adding a few closets to their facilities this off season.

I know Leach speaks his mind and I appreciate that but I feel like we’ve gotten more aggravated/angered Leach than quirky weird funny Leach moments. I’m just such a fan of goofy and weird that I find that disappointing. I know they aren’t having a good season and that’s probably the reason but it’s his first season there so I still expected more quirk, dammit.

This is when everyone's supposed to laugh, virtually fist bump each other, and talk about how "awesome, hilarious, and irreverant" Leach is.

Dude can be mad at the players all he wants but Derek Mason coached circles around him after the first 10 minutes or so.

We must have watched different games

Your team turns it over 5 times, you didn’t out coach shite

State had a Fr RT who cost them several big plays by holding / personal Fouls ect.

Yes we must have because Vanderbilt outgained them 2 to 1 and had the right answer every step defensively. A true freshman QB shite the bed with interceptions and fumbles but if he doesn't, Vandy wins by multiple touchdowns and there is no denying that.

That’s coaching... thank you

Leach’s FR QB making his first start. No turnovers.

We are using a ton of guys that were in high school this time last year. A lot of them expected to redshirt and were tossed directly into the fire. There is a reason that returning production is such an important stat.

Damn Leach and his...*checks prompter*...Accountability.

I am being extremely patient with Leach. Even though the results aren't what I was expecting, I'm not going to rush to judgement while he is doing the 1 thing our last coach refused to do. This was a 3 year project from the jump. Any State fan expecting otherwise was and is delusional.

You are welcome to believe that if you'd like. Vandy's players were in the right position to make plays all night.

Derek Mason coaches defense, Mike Leach coaches offense. You really believe that MSU's offense looked better than Vanderbilt's defense?

I'm willing to give Leach a pass. I just don't want the wheels to fall completely off until he has the chance to build a program with his players.

Miss State's offense has always been the polar opposite of the kind of offense that Leach runs. There's a bit of a cultural shift that's gonna have to take place before we start seeing results.

No offseason due to COVID. Went into this game with
Frosh QB making his first start
1 OL starter from last yr and this game missing 2 Tackles. A Fr OT starting.
2 freshman RBs starting
1 transfer WR
1 Freshman WR making first start
2 converted TEs starting at the other WR spots. One making his first start

And yet they won. I’d say regardless of opponent, that’s pretty good coaching

State leads all Power 5 schools with 19 new starters this season

You and I often disagree, but you hit this nail on the head.

Damn, that Headline was misleading.
