This entire situation has made me realize I need to get myself checked out extensively. I had a blood panel done a month or so ago and they said it looked good but now I want to get additional testing to make sure. My family doesn’t have the best history

I found a prevention center where I live that did WAYYYYYYYYYY more than my GP ever did .. the basic chol panel was always great. It's the other things that are now checked that "regular" docs don't. I had no need for a cardiologist and they don't always care to prevent .. my lady does.

EDIT -- if anyone is in the Lafayette area, you can contact APEX Prevention. (Disclaimer: there is a $500 "membership" per year BUT I do not pay for the majority of labs which the EOB shows is $$$$ .. she's got it worked out). My lab work is ~$200 twice a year .. VERY worth it to me and my family.

Honest question: if one were to be over 40, have a family history of heart issues (blockages, attacks, open heart surgeries) and hasn't been to a doctor in 20 years, where would he start?

Go to your PCP, start with basic bloodwork (CMP, A1C, lipid panel, etc).

Then get a referral to a cardiologist for any additional workup if necessary (Echo, stress test, Holter monitor, etc).

That was me 2 years ago. Family history but I work out daily, weigh 150 lbs and take good care of my body

Got a calcium scan and my score was off the charts at 1300. Showed a ton of plaque in my widow maker artery. Cardiologist scheduled an immediate cath and luckily all the plaque was spread out over the wall and not clogged

Now I go every year for full stress test, lipids and echocardiogram. I can’t stress how important heart health is and every male needs to have a cardiologist. My doctor told me he’s put stints in 20 something marathoners. You never know

Btw if anyone is in DFW I swear by my guy. My buddy is a doctor and recommended him

Many MD's consider them worthless,
My first one was 10 years ago and my calcium score was 6. Handed to my PCP next visit and he looked at me like I had two heads. It has since trended upward enough to convince me to take a statin (which I had resisted until then). My new LDL target is less than 75 which I am doing easily with the statin.

I agree with what you've been told. Go see your GP first. Most specialist will need a referral from your Dr.
My dad has had 2 heart attacks ( he didn't know he had had one until his cardiologist asked him when he had his first one based on his tests), stents, valve replacement. Based on family history, I asked my GP to set me up with a cardiologist.
Had and echo and a work up. They saw something they didn't like and recommended a stress test. Fortunately not major issues.
I have to go back every 2 to 3 years.
Also, while we are on the subject of medical work ups. If you are over 40/45 yrs, get a colonoscopy. Can save your life.

I spoke to some of my colleagues in the ccu at UMMC this morning and they are laughing at some of the speculation in this thread.

Most insurances won't pay for it prior to 50 without family history of it. I had my first one 2 days after my 50th BD because a Dr friend of mine had recently been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. He gone now.

Seriously, is Rosebowl wrong about him being transitioned to comfort measures, or are the ones saying he'll pull through this the ones who are being laughed at?

I gotta hand it to the hospital and Leach's core friends and family here, its impressive the lack of details that have leaked out today considering this story hit last night.

Yeah, at least let us know which side it falls. Everyone is looking for the tiniest sliver of hope. Is it the doom and gloom ones being laughed at or the pull through-ers?

This needs to change. My family has no history and if I'd waited to 50 I'd be dead. It was by fluke I had a small intestinal blockage 3 years ago and the surgeon saw "something" in a bad area and warned me to get one. The old 50 year old rule didn't account for my terrible modern diet and sedentary lifestyle.

Your GP (btw we prefer the term PCP now) can also order the tests and save you the referral to a cardiologist. A cardiologist still reads the tests if your PCP orders it. However, thanks to the f**ked up way medical procedures are billed an outpatient stress test and echo ordered by your PCP are much cheaper than if they were ordered by a cardiologist. The difference can be over a thousand dollars depending on your insurance and that is big if you have not met your deductible.
