Change...if Gus is the biggest problem. You elimninate that.

There is no change if we promote from within and keep our staff for the most part.

We just lit 20mil on fire. We would have been better off keeping Gus another year.

Kevin Steele was a Power 5 head coach while Malzahn was still coaching high school. He's only worked for Malzahn for a small fraction of his career. I seriously doubt that Gus Malzahn has had one iota of impact on Kevin Steele's philosophy on the position of head football coach. And you'd be going from a head coach who (allegedly) was an offensive expert to one who is a defensive expert. So yes, there would obviously be change. The problem is, as we all know, that Kevin Steele likely wouldn't have any more success than Malzahn, and likely not as much.

As for the assistants...which ones are on one-year contracts? Bringing them back doesn't save you money. No reason to bring them back, unless some of them might be decent at what they do.

Again...I'm not saying it would be a good idea. I hope like hell Auburn hires him. I'm just offering theories about what might be going on the in the mind of the Auburn AD if he's considering Steele.

There seems to be three factions among Auburn power brokers according to JOX this AM:

1. The Hugh Freeze Faction
2. The Mario Cristobal Faction
3. The Kevin Steele Faction

There are Auburn boosters who don't want Freeze due to his past and the baggage it might entail. Cristobal might be the leading candidate for Auburn power brokers but Steele has a faction of very influential people who are pimping him out for the job.

If Auburn was smart, they would hire Hugh Freeze. He reportedly wants the job. All they have to do is ask and he will leave Liberty for Auburn. If Oregon and Cristobal come to an agreement and Auburn ends up settling for Kevin Steele, they deserve everything that comes to them. You don't cut Malzahn a $21 million check to replace him with Kevin Steele. That's stupid.

Kevin Steele seems like such a “one of us” hire. And he’s cheap. It’s gonna happen.

As an Alabama fan, the only one on this list who concerns me is Freeze.

Cristobal has been unable to maintain success either at FIU or Oregon. He was unable to keep a few key players from opting out. Can he recruit? Sure. So can Smart. So can Pruitt. So can Kiffin. So can Mullen. So can Orgeron. Mario Cristobal at Auburn doesn't worry me one bit.

Kevin Steele would be so much of a joke hire and we all know it. No comment is necessary.

Freeze had Ole Miss rolling. He was 4th and 25 away from going to Atlanta and a possible SEC championship. He's done an amazing job at Liberty. Yeah, Freeze at Auburn would concern me. Not hugely, but some.

I think Auburn and Freeze are a perfect match, but the school that brought in Bruce Pearl, who once again has the NCAA lodged firmly up his arse, bringing in Brother Hugh would be begging the NCAA to utterly destroy them if he lets one toe slip out of line, which he will on like day 6.

Do you really believe Auburn is going to pay 21 million to get rid of Malzahn and turn turn around and promote K. Steele? That would be the dumbest move in the history of the world.

Not going to happen. If it did, that would tell you everything you need to know about Auburn.

Again, if we can't get Freeze, I would rather have Napier than Mario

Napier would be a solid choice IMO. Good recruiter, good pedigree, no nonsense type, good program builder. I think that he would do well at Auburn.

This isn't some fantasy of mine.

It is being widely speculated/reported that Steele is a leading candidate.

I am tired of the up and down seasons. Mario has this issue. Napier seems like he can build a program and knows roster management.

Get ready to do it.

Steele will be named before the week is out.

How many "Auburn Insiders" know a damn thing. I am sure Steele has some support down there but in the end, it ain't going to happen. If it does, Auburn just buried itself to Tennessee status.

Dammit. I was hoping this was about Chad Morris.

I am more iffy on Freeze than many, and not just because of the baggage.

He had a Playoff caliber team in 2015 and proceeded to get smoked by a good but not great Florida squad and lost to Memphis and a five loss Arkansas. Sure, Ole Miss did end up finishing the year strong and winning the Sugar Bowl, but I think that team underachieved. Swag Kelly was fantastic that year and they were loaded on both sides of the ball, that shouldn't have been a three loss team.

In his last year at Ole Miss he had a preseason Top 15 team and went 5-7, including blowout losses to Vandy and a bad State team.

At Liberty he's been good but he has a ton of resources compared to his peers.

There are some good things about Freeze for sure, but is the risk worth the reward? I'm not convinced he would do noticeably better than Malzahn results-wise. People remember Hugh's big wins against Bama but nobody talks about some of the WTF losses he had at Ole Miss. And there were quite a few.

I dont think he is a good coach, either. He beat up on some crappy teams this year. Was at the front of the shift to O, so his status as a O genius is over inflated. He was buying recruits (and lot lizards). He is a .com stock.

Whoever it is, that person needs to already have a ticket on a plane to Opelika West.

Otherwise, The search committee/AD/BOT family are going to gum it up good. It's just a tradition.

I’m sure Steele is telling everyone who will listen that he would absolutely leave not one soul associated with the offense (and maybe even Nix) if he is hired.

It will be an absolute clean plate - he probably already has someone to present as the OC (asst. HC). It may be intriguing.
